Position Title: Import Manager
Reports To: Operations Director
Position Summary
The Import Manager oversees and coordinates all international inbound logistics activities for the organization. This role ensures imported goods are delivered on time, in full, and in compliance with all customs regulations and company policies. The Import Manager works closely with suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal teams to maintain efficient, cost-effective import operations.
Key Responsibilities
Import Operations Management
- Manage and execute end-to-end import processes from order placement to final delivery.
- Coordinate shipment schedules with suppliers, carriers, and freight forwarders.
- Prepare and review import documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, etc.).
- Track, monitor, and ensure timely clearance of shipments through customs.
Customs Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all international trade regulations, customs laws, and import controls.
- Work closely with customs brokers to ensure accurate classification, valuation, and documentation.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of import regulations, tariffs, Incoterms, trade agreements, and duty optimization opportunities.
Cost & Vendor Management
- Negotiate rates and contracts with freight forwarders, shipping lines, and logistics service providers.
- Analyze freight costs, duties, demurrage, and customs-related expenses; identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Evaluate vendor performance and maintain strong relationships with external partners.
Internal Coordination
- Collaborate with procurement, warehousing, finance, and production teams to support inventory planning.
- Communicate shipment status and resolve delays or issues promptly.
- Provide accurate import data and reports for internal stakeholders.
Risk Management
- Identify and mitigate risks in the import process, including delays, compliance issues, and supply chain disruptions.
- Implement continuous improvements to strengthen reliability and efficiency of import operations.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, International Business, Logistics, or related field.
- 3–7+ years of experience in import operations, international logistics, or supply chain management.
- Prior experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and global suppliers.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of global trade regulations, customs procedures, and Incoterms.
- Excellent documentation and organizational skills.
- Proficient in ERP systems, shipping platforms, and MS Office.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple shipments/projects simultaneously.
