Position: In-House Counsel – State Regulatory & Consumer Protection Defense

Location: Comstock Park, MI (On-site / Hybrid Possible)

Compensation: $100,000–$160,000+ per year (DOE) + performance incentives

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Michigan-licensed attorney to serve as in-house counsel with a focus on state-level regulatory matters, consumer protection defense, and administrative law.

This role will lead all communications and negotiations with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, LARA, MIOSHA, and other state agencies, ensuring our companies remain compliant while actively defending against regulatory overreach or enforcement actions.

You will work directly with ownership on strategy, filings, and defense preparation for pending or potential state actions, and oversee coordination with outside counsel as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the company’s point of contact for the Michigan Attorney General’s Office and Consumer Protection Division.
  • Draft and negotiate Assurance Agreements, consent orders, and settlement frameworks.
  • Prepare and respond to civil investigative demands (CIDs), subpoenas, and formal state correspondence.
  • Coordinate discovery, document production, and compliance responses.
  • Conduct internal reviews to ensure contract language, business practices, and advertising meet Michigan consumer laws.
  • Advise ownership and management on risk exposure, compliance updates, and proactive legal strategy.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies, insurance companies, and legal partners to maintain alignment and minimize exposure.
  • Develop and implement policies to reduce regulatory risk across multiple entities (construction, restoration, and tree service).

Qualifications

  • Active license to practice law in Michigan (required).
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in one or more of the following:
  • Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA) enforcement defense
  • Administrative or regulatory law (LARA, MIOSHA, or similar agencies)
  • Government litigation, investigations, or compliance defense
  • Experience negotiating directly with state attorneys or regulatory investigators preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Michigan construction, contractor, and consumer laws.
  • Excellent written advocacy, negotiation, and strategic communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a high-stakes, fast-paced business environment.

Why Join Us

  • Join a growing, multi-industry organization with 30+ years in operation across construction, restoration, and environmental services.
  • Direct access to ownership and decision-makers — no bureaucracy, just results.
  • Opportunity to shape compliance and legal defense strategy across several companies.
  • Competitive pay, strong infrastructure, and long-term stability.
  • Offices located in Sparta, MI, with flexibility for hybrid work when appropriate.
