Job Summary
The ICU In-Charge is responsible for the overall clinical, administrative, and operational management of the Intensive Care Unit, ensuring delivery of high-quality, safe, and evidence-based critical care services. The role requires strong leadership, advanced clinical expertise, and the ability to manage all ICU cases efficiently.
Key Responsibilities :
Clinical Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all ICU cases, including ventilated, hemodynamically unstable, post-operative, and high-risk patients.
- Ensure strict adherence to ICU protocols, infection control practices, and patient safety standards.
- Monitor and guide nursing care related to ventilators, ABGs, central lines, arterial lines, dialysis (CRRT), and emergency interventions.
- Coordinate closely with Intensivists, Consultants, Residents, and allied departments for optimal patient outcomes.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of nursing notes, care plans, and ICU charts.
- Supervise emergency response during code blue, cardiac arrest, and other critical situations.
Administrative & Leadership Responsibilities
- Plan and manage ICU staffing, duty rosters, leave schedules, and shift allocations.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate ICU nursing staff and support staff.
- Conduct regular training, skill-based sessions, and competency assessments for ICU staff.
- Participate in recruitment, induction, and orientation of new ICU nurses.
- Ensure optimal utilization and availability of ICU equipment, drugs, and consumables.
- Report and manage incidents, adverse events, and near misses as per hospital policy.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with NABH / statutory / hospital accreditation standards.
- Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and mortality & morbidity reviews.
- Maintain ICU readiness for inspections, audits, and emergency preparedness.
- Implement evidence-based nursing practices and continuous quality improvement measures.
Coordination & Communication
- Act as the primary point of contact for ICU-related coordination between medical, nursing, biomedical, pharmacy, and administration teams.
- Communicate effectively with patient attendants regarding care processes (as per policy).
- Ensure smooth inter-shift handovers and continuity of care.
