- Patient care: Provide direct, round-the-clock medical care to critically ill patients in the ICU, monitoring their condition and managing complex diseases like heart failure, respiratory failure, and multiple organ failure.
- Procedures: Perform and supervise advanced procedures such as intubation, insertion of central and arterial lines, and management of mechanical ventilators.
- Team leadership: Lead daily multidisciplinary rounds, collaborate with other specialists, nurses, and respiratory therapists, and coordinate care with the entire healthcare team.
- Decision-making: Make rapid, evidence-based clinical decisions under high-stress conditions, and be proficient in areas like pharmacology and pathophysiology.
- Quality and education: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, develop clinical guidelines, and mentor medical staff and trainees.
- Family communication: Communicate effectively with patients' families, provide updates, and participate in end-of-life discussions and ethical decision-making.
