1. Design & Concept Development:
- Space Planning: Optimizing the layout for functionality, flow, and compliance with building codes.
- Conceptual Design: Creating mood boards, material palettes, and conceptual sketches that tell a story.
- Client Liaison: Working closely with clients to understand their brand identity (for commercial) or lifestyle (for residential) and translating that into a design brief.
2. Technical Design & Documentation (The "Architect" side):
- Detailed Drawing Packages: Creating construction drawings, including floor plans, elevations, sections, and detailed RCPs (Reflected Ceiling Plans).
- Joinery Shop Drawings: Producing highly detailed, dimensioned drawings for custom furniture, cabinetry, wall paneling, and other built-in elements. This includes specifying materials, joinery methods, finishes, and hardware.
- Specification Writing: Documenting every material, fixture, and fitting to be used.
- Building Regulations & Compliance: Ensuring designs meet all local codes for accessibility, fire safety, and structural integrity.
3. Fit-Out & Joinery Management (The "Execution" side):
- Tender & Procurement: Preparing tender documents, selecting and appointing fit-out contractors and joinery workshops.
- Project Management: Overseeing the site construction phase, managing schedules, budgets, and quality control.
- Site Supervision: Conducting regular site visits to ensure the work is being carried out according to the design intent and drawings.
- Problem Solving: Resolving on-site unforeseen issues and providing practical solutions that align with the design vision.
Key Skills & Expertise
- Technical Proficiency:
- Software: Mastery of AutoCAD (essential), SketchUp (or Rhino) for 3D modeling, and Revit (increasingly important for BIM). Rendering skills with Enscape, V-Ray, or Lumion are a huge plus.
- Material Knowledge: Deep understanding of wood, veneers, laminates, solid surfaces, metals, glass, and composites, including their properties, costs, and applications.
- Construction Detailing: The ability to design how different materials and elements connect, understanding tolerances, expansion, and practical construction sequences.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Ability to design to a budget and manage costs throughout the project.
- Supplier & Contractor Relations: A strong network of reliable joiners, metalworkers, and fit-out contractors is invaluable
