Compensation — Based on Education Level

  • High School: $19.57/hour
  • Freshman or Sophomore: $19.57/hour
  • Junior or Senior: $21.17/hour
  • Graduate Student: $24.77/hour

Interns typically work 25–29 hours per week. The anticipated schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with some flexibility, and final schedules will be discussed with the supervisor.

About the Internship

The Hillsboro Library is seeking engaged, dependable interns to support summer library community events and outreach programs across Hillsboro. Up to two internship opportunities may be filled through this recruitment.

This internship offers hands-on experience supporting library programs that take place in parks, neighborhoods, and community spaces throughout the city. Interns will work alongside library staff to help deliver welcoming, engaging programs for children, teens, adults, and families during one of the Library’s busiest programming seasons.

This role is primarily field-based and onsite at outreach locations, with some office-based support work as needed.

About the Hillsboro Library

The Hillsboro Library provides access to information, learning resources, and community programming that support lifelong learning and community connection. Through outreach services, library staff bring programs, resources, and activities directly into neighborhoods and community spaces across Hillsboro.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to see how libraries serve the community beyond the library building.

What You’ll Do

Under staff supervision, interns will assist with outreach programs, community events, and program support tasks such as:

  • Traveling with library staff to outreach sites across Hillsboro
  • Setting up and taking down outreach activities and event materials
  • Welcoming and engaging community members of all ages during programs
  • Assisting children and families during activities and events
  • Helping promote programs by inviting community members to participate
  • Answering questions about library programs, services, and resources
  • Assisting patrons with basic tasks such as catalog searching or locating materials
  • Supporting outreach volunteers and helping maintain communication with them
  • Organizing and preparing outreach supplies and materials
  • Tracking participation numbers and collecting program feedback
  • Assisting with light office tasks such as preparing flyers, sending emails, and organizing materials
  • Supporting special programs and events, including the End of Summer Reading Celebration

A typical week may include helping staff set up an outreach program at a neighborhood park, assisting families during activities, collecting attendance information, and preparing supplies for the next event.

  • Light graphic design or flyer creation experience is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to communicate in additional languages is a plus and helps us better serve Hillsboro’s diverse community

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary), or have graduated within the last three months.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform light physical tasks such as lifting or moving materials up to approximately 20 pounds

Licensing / Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record preferred but not required.
