JR. APPLICATION ENGINEER

Summary:

This entry-level position supports the review and evaluation of customer requirements in order to assist in the creation of technical sales proposals. Under the guidance of senior staff, the Jr. Application Engineer helps ensure accurate scope and project requirements are conveyed to the Engineering Department to support successful and profitable projects.

This position focuses on supporting various markets for three main business units: Industrial, Process Technology, and Metallurgical. This role is designed as a development position, providing training and experience to progress toward a full Application Engineer role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Proposal Life Cycle Responsibilities
    • Perform basic calculations and prepare preliminary technical options for review by senior staff.
    • Assist in estimating costs for proposed solutions utilizing software tools, historical data and guidance from Application Engineers.
    • Assist in developing technical sales proposals under guidance of senior staff.
    • Gather data to support responses to internal and external customer technical questions.
    • Support review of specifications to assure accuracy with respect to proposals, escalating discrepancies to senior staff.
    • Prepare and organize documentation to support clear handoff of project requirements to the Project Engineering Department.

  • General Support and Business Development Responsibilities
    • Assist in evaluating and improving Lechler tools, processes and documentation.
    • Provide support in evaluating process media and recommending materials of construction.
    • Participate in testing activities to gather nozzle performance and/or process data.
    • Assist internal and external customers with application questions, under guidance.
    • Support trade shows and sales calls as part of development.
    • Perform field measurements and provide limited Engineering commissioning support, under senior supervision.
    • Work on assigned tasks across multiple projects, exercising sound judgment and escalating trade-offs to senior staff.
    • Other responsibilities as required.

  • Business Unit and Market Specific Responsibilities

  • Industrial
    • Assist with lance and header layout designs; perform basic liquid distribution calculations.

  • Process Technology
    • Assist in preparing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs); support gas cooling and stoichiometric calculations; assist with pipe sizing and thermal expansion reviews.
    • Prepare Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s).

  • Metallurgical
    • Support header layout designs and mill audit data collection; assist in pipe stress and liquid impact calculations.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent combination of technical education and professional experience.
  • Internships/Co-ops accepted as experience

Language Skills:

  • Must be proficient in English and possess the ability to read, to analyze, and to interpret common scientific/technical literature, financial reports, and/or legal documents.
  • Possess the ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customer
  • Possess the ability to read and interpret business related documents.
  • Ability to speak, write and communicate in German or Spanish is a plus.



Mathematical Skills:

  • Have the ability to work with fundamental engineering mathematical concepts.
  • Understand the fundamentals of plane and solid geometry.
  • Possess the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Have the ability to identify problems, to collect data, to establish facts, and to draw valid conclusions. Have the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Technology and Equipment:

  • Basic knowledge in the use of AutoCAD and/or Inventor.
  • Proficient with the latest Microsoft Office products.

Other Qualifications and Abilities:

Occasional travel within North America and abroad may be required.

Physical Demands:

The following physical activities are required to perform the duties of this position:

  • Communicating through speaking and hearing.
  • Sitting and using hands and fingers to handle or to feel objects.
  • Standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms.
  • Lifting and moving objects up to 10 pounds.
  • Close visual inspection.

Work Environment:

The following work environment is typically encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
