Role Summary

The Lab Analyst will be responsible for conducting routine and advanced laboratory analyses to support the monitoring and optimization of mushroom compost production. This role involves performing chemical and physical tests such as Kjeldahl Nitrogen, moisture content, ash content, pH, ammoniacal nitrogen, and ammonium levels. The analyst will ensure accurate, timely, and reliable data to guide compost preparation, phase-1/phase-2 adjustments, and overall yield improvement at the mushroom farm.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Conduct Kjeldahl Nitrogen (Total Nitrogen) analysis using manual or semi-automatic distillation units.
  • Perform Moisture Content determination using oven-drying or moisture balance methods.
  • Carry out Ash Content analysis using muffle furnace protocols.
  • Measure pH of compost, water extracts, and casing samples using calibrated pH meters.
  • Test Ammoniacal Nitrogen and Ammonium (NH₄⁺) levels using appropriate colorimetric or distillation methods.
  • Prepare, label, and store all samples properly according to SOPs.
  • Maintain accurate logs for each analysis including batch ID, dates, equipment used, and results.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate lab equipment such as:
  • Kjeldahl digestion/distillation unit
  • Analytical balance
  • pH meter and EC meter
  • Drying oven
  • Muffle furnace
  • Spectrophotometer (if required)
  • Ammonia monitoring tools (e.g., Gastec tubes)
  • Perform routine calibration and maintenance of instruments.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed for acids, alkalis, gases, and high-temperature equipment.

Quality Control & Documentation

  • Prepare and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all tests.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation, logs, and result sheets for each compost batch.
  • Assist in establishing control samples and baseline values for compost quality.
  • Verify accuracy of results through duplicates, standards, and blanks.
  • Report deviations or unusual results immediately to the Compost Production Manager.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure safe handling of hazardous chemicals such as sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, boric acid, and catalysts.
  • Keep track of reagent inventory and request replenishments when needed.
  • Follow PPE and safety protocols strictly during digestions, distillations, and high-temperature work.

QualificationsEducation

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Microbiology, Agriculture, or related fields.

Experience

  • 1–3 years’ experience in a chemical testing laboratory (environmental lab, food lab, fertilizer lab, soil/compost lab preferred).
  • Experience with wet chemistry techniques (titration, distillation, digestion) is essential.
  • Experience with Kjeldahl analysis is highly desirable.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of basic analytical chemistry.
  • Ability to perform precise measurements and maintain accurate records.
  • Familiarity with calibration and maintenance of lab instruments.
  • Good understanding of safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify anomalies in results.
  • Ability to work independently and meet testing deadlines.

Working Conditions

  • Laboratory environment with exposure to acids, heat, and chemical reagents.
  • Work may involve occasional evening or weekend sampling during peak production cycles.
  • Requires adherence to strict safety standards.
