Description

The Department of Physiology is hiring a Lab Assistant to support ongoing research focused on understanding the disease mechanisms of periodic paralysis and myotonia, neuromuscular disorders caused by mutations in ion channels. The lab’s primary aim is to elucidate these mechanisms and use that knowledge to design and conduct preclinical testing of disease-modifying therapies using knock-in mutant mouse models.

The Lab Assistant will be primarily responsible for performing muscle dissections and contraction studies using tissue samples obtained from these models. The position involves following established laboratory and data collection protocols, with daily mentoring and supervision provided by a Project Scientist. Work is assigned, reviewed, and periodically supervised by the Laboratory Director The Lab Assistant will also participate in regular lab meetings to stay aligned with research objectives and integrate fully into the collaborative work of the laboratory.

Hourly range: $22.02-$25.90

Qualifications

Required:

  • Working knowledge of solution chemistry to allow preparation of media, stock solutions, and buffers;
  • Ability to use computers to enter data accurately (Excel); .
  • Ability to follow instructions and protocols to perform assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Reading skills sufficient to understand journal articles and scientific protocols;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and to understand and carry out verbal instructions.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and effectively to receive and convey information accurately and in a professional manner; Demonstrated ability to work as member of team, with respect for all, and impeccable integrity for honesty in data management and analysis.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of accepted/approved procedures in working with mice, including surgicalprocedures, breeding, genotyping ect;
  • Skill in laboratory safety protocols including proper handling of biohazardous; substances, including chemicals;
  • Demonstrated writing skills for generation of basic laboratory protocols and to ensure; acceptable record/data keeping;
  • Skill in use of specialized lab equipment (PCR, microscopes, pH meters, balances, centrifuges etc.); Knowledge of sterile culture techniques.
