Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV for the Department of Marine & Coastal Sciences within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position reports to the Department Chair, and supports research operations across multiple laboratories in the department, including the Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory, the Benthic Ecology Research Laboratory, and the Rutgers Elemental Analytical Laboratory (REAL).
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Ensures smooth laboratory operations.
- Supports faculty, staff, and students in research activities.
- Maintains compliance with departmental safety and operational standards.
- Conducts nutrient and elemental analyses accurately and reliably.
- Maintains and troubleshoots aquaria systems for fish, corals, and algae, requiring an understanding of water chemistry and organism health.
- Performs metabolic chamber experiments for physiological and biochemical measurements.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences or a related field.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with standard laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation, prepare reagents, and process biological and chemical samples.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Excellent communication skills, record-keeping ability, and basic competency with data management and analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
- Advanced knowledge in the fields of marine science, biology, and analytical chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with algal culturing and fish/coral tank construction and maintenance.
- Proficiency with elemental and nutrient analysis techniques (e.g., FlashSmart NC Analyzer, spectrophotometry, fluorometry).
- Experience conducting metabolic chamber experiments for coral, algae, or other marine organisms.
- Hands-on experience with oceanographic fieldwork, particularly in the design, construction, and maintenance of flow-through tanks and filtration apparatuses.
- Strong organizational skills for managing laboratory and field consumables.
- Prior experience training students or assisting in multi-investigator laboratory environments.
- Proficiency in statistical/data analysis software (R, SPSS) and scientific data management.
Equipment Utilized
- Analytical equipment: elemental analyzers (e.g., FlashSmart NC Analyzer), spectrophotometers, fluorometers, nutrient autoanalyzers, and metabolic chambers.
- Aquatic system equipment: recirculating aquaculture systems, coral and algal culture systems, flow-through tanks, filtration apparatuses, pumps, protein skimmers, RO water systems, and associated plumbing.
- General laboratory equipment: centrifuges, microscopes, pH meters, balances, autoclaves, cold storage units.
- Field research instrumentation: CTDs, LISST sensors, drift arrays, sediment coring equipment, and other oceanographic gear.
- Software: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), R, SPSS, and instrument-specific data acquisition and analysis software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform tasks that require bending, stooping, and climbing ladders and stairs.
- Ability to work in restricted spaces (e.g., aquaria system areas, tight laboratory setups).
- Ability to stand for extended periods while conducting laboratory or fieldwork.
- Work environment includes laboratory, field, and aquaria settings, which may involve exposure to chemicals, seawater, live organisms, and mechanical equipment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision to support research or field operations.
