Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant for the Child Health Institute of NJ at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator the Temp Research Assistant (TRA) will be responsible for performing experiments focused on the genetic causes of congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) associated with brain malformations and intellectual disability and zebrafish animal husbandry. The project is part of a larger effort in the lab to develop zebrafish models to screen therapeutic approaches. The TRA will be responsible for the maintenance and analysis of zebrafish models of CMDs and the performance of experiments in collaboration with other lab members. The Principal Investigator and other lab members will allocate tasks and oversee progress.

The TRA will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintains mutant colonies by breeding and genotyping.
  • Uses molecular biology and imaging approaches to analyze neuromuscular phenotypes in zebrafish mutants.
  • Assists other lab members in behavioral and histological analyses in zebrafish mutants.
  • Compiles and analyzes data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions, and future directions in support of further CHI research.
  • Adheres to established performance standards and coordination of instrumentation and experimental approaches in support of CHI research.
  • Keeps clear and detailed records of procedures and experiments in accordance with laboratory guidelines, maintain data in shared and readily accessible locations, present data to the PI and other lab members.
  • Works collaboratively and independently with laboratories and researchers within CHI and Rutgers.
  • Attends and actively participates in both weekly and monthly group research meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Current advanced undergraduate student or recent graduate majoring in a biomedical discipline or psychology.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to perform laboratory research.
  • Must be able to work with zebrafish.
  • Some lifting may be required: laboratory items, tanks, and/or boxes.
  • Walking, standing, sitting is required.
Work Environment:
  • Must pass employee health clearance, TB test and required safety and animal training.
  • Must follow all safety precautions in laboratory, as required.
  • Research laboratory and office setting, moderate noise levels.
