Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:

The Production Lab Technician will perform critical materiallographic preparation and

analysis on gas turbine components to support the Hot Gas Path (HGP) repair and quality

control processes. This role ensures repaired components meet rigorous engineering and

quality standards before being returned to service. The ideal candidate has a strong

background in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Laboratory Technology and is highly

proficient in precision sample preparation and various microscopy techniques. We are

committed to creating an inclusive workplace and encouraging all qualified individuals to

apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Metallographic Sample Preparation & Analysis

  • Precision Sample Preparation: Execute all phases of metallographic sample preparation for cross-section analysis, including mounting, sectioning, grinding, and polishing of superalloy turbine components and thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to the highest quality standards.
  • Optical Microscopy & Measurement: Utilize Optical Microscopy to conduct detailed examinations and measure key material characteristics on prepared samples, including:
  • Quantifying the porosity and microstructural features of repaired coatings and base materials.
  • Accurately measuring the thickness of coatings (e.g., bond coats, TBCs) and diƯusion layers.
  • Documenting and reporting microstructural defects (e.g., cracks, oxide inclusions).
  • Surface Finish Analysis: Perform precision roughness measurements on prepared component surfaces (both base metal and coated areas) using a profilometer or other dedicated equipment to ensure compliance with repair specifications.

2. Advanced Testing and Microscopy

  • Coating Adhesion Testing: Conduct Bond Strength Tests (e.g., tensile adhesion testing) on coated specimens following standard test procedures (e.g., ASTM standards), recording load and failure mode data accurately.
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM): Operate and maintain the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to perform high-magnification surface and cross-section analysis. This includes:
  • Imaging microstructures and fractured surfaces.
  • Utilizing Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis and identification of phases, contaminants, or corrosion products within the material.

3. Quality, Documentation, and Process Support (Added Value)

  • Data Management and Reporting: Compile, analyze, and present test data and images in clear, concise technical reports. Input results into the Quality Management System (QMS) or laboratory database (e.g., LIMS, SAP) with strict attention to detail.
  • Laboratory Maintenance and Calibration: Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and minor troubleshooting on laboratory equipment, including optical microscopes, grinding/polishing machines, profilometers, and bond strength testers. Report major equipment issues to the Engineering or Maintenance teams.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols (e.g., PPE, chemical handling, waste disposal) and ensure all testing is performed in compliance with relevant industry standards, specifications, and internal work instructions.
  • Inventory and Ordering: Maintain accurate inventory of all metallographic consumables, chemicals, and testing supplies, initiating timely purchase requests to ensure uninterrupted production flow.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Post-secondary diploma or associate’s degree in laboratory technology /chemical technology OR a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: Previous hands-on experience (3-5 years minimum preferred) in a production or quality control laboratory environment, ideally with experience in metallography, non-destructive testing (NDT), or materials testing.
  • Technical Skills: Proven proficiency in precision sample preparation (mounting, polishing) and operation of optical microscopes and associated measurement software.
  • Personal Attributes: Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team.
  • Commitment to Safety: Demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety and working with hazardous materials.
