We are seeking a highly skilled Lawn Care Department Manager who combines technical turf expertise with leadership ability and strong client communication skills.
This is not an entry-level position.
This role is for someone who wants ownership, responsibility, and the opportunity to help lead and shape a growing lawn care department.
Position Overview
The Lawn Care Department Manager serves as the operational and technical leader for our lawn care division. This role bridges the gap between field operations and client relationships by overseeing lawn technicians, maintaining quality standards, diagnosing turf issues, and working directly with clients to deliver solutions.
This individual must be extremely knowledgeable in turf health and lawn care practices and comfortable working both in the field and in client-facing situations.
Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Team Development
- Train, mentor, and support lawn technicians and mowing staff
- Ensure department employees follow company systems and quality standards
- Conduct field training and performance coaching
- Maintain high expectations for efficiency, professionalism, and workmanship
- Identify opportunities to improve department processes and outcomes
Quality Control & Field Oversight
- Perform routine quality checks on lawn applications and mowing work
- Identify and correct performance issues proactively
- Ensure treatments are applied correctly and at proper timing intervals
- Maintain consistent service standards across all crews
Turf Diagnostics & Lawn Analysis
- Meet directly with clients for lawn analysis appointments
- Diagnose turf issues including weeds, disease, insects, soil conditions, compaction, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental stress
- Develop corrective action plans
- Recommend services and treatment programs based on professional evaluation
- Act as the company’s technical expert for lawn care concerns
Client Relations & Problem Resolution
- Respond to lawn care-related client concerns and complaints
- Provide professional, confident explanations and solutions
- Build trust through knowledge, communication, and follow-through
- Help retain and strengthen long-term client relationships
Operational Support
- Assist in department planning and scheduling coordination
- Provide feedback on program improvements and service offerings
- Support continued growth and development of the lawn care division
Required Qualifications
- Strong professional experience in lawn care, turf management, or related field
- Advanced knowledge of turfgrass identification, weed identification, and lawn health diagnostics
- Experience with fertilizer and weed control programs
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot lawn issues independently
- Leadership experience managing or mentoring field staff
- Strong communication skills with both clients and team members
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Turf management education or certifications
- Wisconsin pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain)
- Experience in a high-volume lawn care company
- Sales or consulting experience with lawn care services
Compensation & Benefits
- $70,000 – $85,000 annual salary
