Lead Designer

Conductor Power is seeking a highly motivated Lead Designer to support our engineering and estimating teams in the development of utility-scale solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and substation. This role is central to producing layout designs and coordinating with both internal teams and external engineers during the bid and design stages.

While an engineering degree is not required, the position does demand strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who can adapt to evolving project needs and has the ambition to grow into more advanced preconstruction or project development roles.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Develop and revise site layout drawings for utility-scale solar, BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), and substation projects, including both electrical and civil components (e.g., equipment placement, trench routing, access roads, grading zones, fence lines).
• Assist in developing preliminary designs and design assumptions for use in bids.
• Participate in internal engineering discussions and help document design decisions and assumptions.
• Coordinate with Engineers of Record (EORs) and other external stakeholders to gather data or clarify design requirements.
• Track and organize drawing packages and proposal documentation for use in internal and external reviews.
• Develop and manage company standard CAD template.
• Flexible in working with various CAD add-on programs such as PVCASE and Grading Optimizer.
• Provide CAD-related support to the construction team as needed.
• Develop design and layout best practice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• 5+ years of experience in utility-scale construction, solar layout design, estimating or a related technical field.
• Proficient in AutoCAD (or equivalent CAD software); experience with Civil 3D or GIS tools is a plus.
• Experience reading construction plans, site surveys, and specifications.
• Comfortable working with Excel and basic quantity takeoff tools.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage deadlines and adjust to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Education:

• Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in drafting, design technology, construction management, or a related field preferred.
• Bachelor's degree not required, but considered a plus.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a technical role supporting engineering, estimating, or construction projects; utility-scale solar or substation experience preferred.
• Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with Civil 3D, GIS, or other design tools is advantageous.
• Prior experience performing quantity takeoffs, developing layouts, or reviewing construction drawings is strongly preferred.
• Exposure to cable routing, sizing tools, or electrical modeling software is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Primarily sedentary work when working in the office. Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and office equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and other team members.
• When navigating a job site, the ability to move around project sites, which may involve walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.

Travel:

• Ability to travel up to 15% of the time to visit sites, attend trade shows, or customer visits.
