Job Description and Duties

Under direction of the Supervising Groundskeeper II, the Lead Groundskeeper I, CF is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and irrigation systems. Assist other trades with plumbing repairs and projects and landscaping and grounds maintenance throughout the institution. The position is also responsible for maintaining order, supervising the conduct of inmates, and protecting the safety of persons or property.


The Lead Groundskeeper I, CF, installs, maintains, and repairs various plumbing, irrigation, sprinkler systems and control valves. This includes all drains and water supply systems. Directs Groundskeepers and incarcerated people in the maintenance of clogged drains and waterways. Inspects drain systems periodically to prevent drain obstruction. Installs and repairs potable and non-potable water systems, pumps, and water control systems. Maintains and operates various equipment such as front-end loaders, dump trucks, tractors, and backhoes.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Working Conditions

California State Prison-Sacramento (CSP-SAC) is located in Folsom, CA.

The Lead Groundskeeper I, CF, working in the field can expect to spend approximately 15% percent of his/her workday indoor and 85% percent outdoors. However, these percentages may vary depending on the type of work that must be completed.

Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in plumbing, irrigation, landscaping and the propagating, planting, cultivating, spraying, and otherwise caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees; flowers, shrubs and ornamental and shade trees commonly grown in California, and their planting and growing requirements; plant pests and diseases and methods of their control and eradication.
