GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
This position assists the staff attorney in their deputy prosecuting attorney role with the City of Rogers, Legal Department in preparing for misdemeanor court proceedings. In addition to other duties as assigned, this position is responsible for coordination of court dockets, compilation of case files, victim and witness communication, assistance with motion and order preparation and filing, issuing subpoenas, discovery compilation and compliance, and obtaining criminal histories and crime lab results. The selected applicant must pass a criminal background check, and either have or obtain his or her ACIC certification. When needed, this position meets with crime victims to explain the criminal court process, gather relevant information for the case file, and offer avenues for assistance when applicable. This position requires efficient, clear, and cordial communication with the public, Rogers Police Department, defense attorneys, and the Courts. Maintaining confidentiality of case file information is essential to the position. Time management and the ability to multi-task are essential to this role. This position accompanies the staff attorney to court and must remain professional in a courtroom setting. Participates in answering phone lines and back up office duties as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for preparing and maintaining case files for court proceedings. This duty is performed daily.
2. Responsible for making discovery requests including police reports, video requests, crime lab results, and paperwork from other agencies. This duty is performed daily.
3. Performs all aspects of secretarial duties. This duty is performed daily.
4. Promotes positive public image through excellent customer service. This duty is performed daily.
5. Prepare and issue subpoenas for trials and prepare and addresses witness questions and concerns. This duty is performed monthly.
6. Schedule victim meetings, address concerns, provide court information and assistance as needed. This duty is performed weekly.
7. Coordinate with other governmental departments to effectuate the smooth flow of information. This duty is performed daily.
8. Responsible for distributing discovery and plea offers to defense attorneys. This duty is performed weekly.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge of a specialized field (however acquired), such as basic accounting, computer, etc. Equivalent of four years in high school, plus night, trade extension, or correspondence school specialized training, equal to two years of college, plus 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Required 2 year degree.
Required 1-3 years experience in the legal field.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Arkansas Crime Information Center Certification.
Current Notary Public.
Graduation from an ABA certified paralegal program.
Bilingual.
