Applicants must reside within 200 miles of Junction City, Kansas to be considered.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the District Court Trustee and the Lead Legal Secretary, the Legal Secretary is a non-exempt position responsible for assisting the public and district court in the enforcement of child support orders, and the collection of court debts. The main duties of this position are the preparation and filing of legal documents, composing correspondence and assisting parties regarding their child support cases and the collection of court debts. The Legal Secretary must exercise independent judgment for their assigned caseload based on knowledge gained through experience in the performance of specialized duties.

Maintaining the confidentiality of the information obtained and used in this office is essential. Discretion is required.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares, types and files legal documents and correspondence such as journal entries, summons, motions, and subpoenas

  • Must utilize the following computer systems: Odyssey and E-flex, Kansas Department of Labor, KPC system, and District Court Trustee Child Support and Court Debt databases. Compliance with all computer security agreements is mandatory;
  • Responsible for the caseload assigned specifically to the Legal Secretary, including child support collections and court debt collections;
  • Coordinate the District Court Trustee’s schedule with the court calendar when setting hearing dates and times;
  • Performs casework on all case files specifically assigned to the Legal Secretary, including, but not limited to, data entry, scanning, filing, retrieving information; location of custodial parents, non custodial parents, court debt debtors, employers, and assets; Screens telephone calls, from the public and the employees of various agencies, on assigned cases and resolves as may calls as possible without supervisory attorney intervention. Performs casework assigned to other Legal Secretaries when the other Legal Secretary is absent or has fallen behind in performing reviews.
  • Maintains satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, fellow employees, and the employees of other agencies.

Designated work hours: Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m.; with a required one-hour lunch break.
