Librarian - Library Services Department

This is professional and supervisory library work in various phases of library activities and operations.


An employee in this class may serve as a Children's Librarian, Reference Librarian, Audio-Visual Librarian, Circulation Librarian or Cataloger. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, coordinating, assigning, and reviewing the work of subordinate employees. Work is performed within the framework of established library policies and procedures, but the employee has considerable latitude for exercise of judgment and improvisation of methods. Work is evaluated upon completion by the Library.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Answers and researches questions asked by patrons on the telephone or in person


Teaches patrons how to use the card catalog, indexes, microfilm readers, etc.


Conducts story hours for children


Reviews and selects materials


Writes short public announcements for newspapers, radio, and television stations


Catalogs books


Prepares bibliographies and specialized reading lists


Plans, assigns, and reviews work of subordinate employees


Trains and instructs subordinates in the proper procedures


Maintains routine records; prepares reports


TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualification Requirements:


Training and Experience:

Graduation from an American Library Association accredited college with a Master's degree in Library Science, Library Information Science, Information Science, and Science in Information. Your degree will be required as part of your application.


Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.


Physical Requirements:

Reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity, and repetitive motions. Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time.
