Hiring Department: Library Assistant II

Reports To: Access Services Department Head

Job Location: Onsite, El Paso, TX

Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.

Hours: Typical work week schedule, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m., nights and weekends as needed. Works weekends, evenings and nights, skeleton days as needed and supports staff with flexibility of schedule. Schedule varies as per school intersession 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

FLSA status: non-exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: $25,000 annually

Position Summary


Responsible for Access Services Desk functions to include, but not limited to, charging and discharging materials, processing Texshare and Alumni cards, collecting and posting fines, providing general patron assistance. Directs and manages In-Process Requests, works weekends and evenings as needed, responsible for opening and/or closing the building according to the needs of the Library. Requires a flexible schedule. Responsible for using customer service skills to answer questions, troubleshoot, teach, and inform the UTEP community about the Library’s resources, tools, and services in face-to-face settings; online via email; and remotely via phone call. Supervises shelf maintenance and the shifting of the Library’s physical items as outlined by the Head of Access Services. Responsible for processing all items at the book drop as needed. Performs Cash box reconciliation as part of the closing procedures for Access Services, as needed.

Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for operating the Access Services desk, including assisting patrons, charging and discharging materials, collecting fines, staffing the reserve desk, and monitoring security stations.

Assists with opening/closing the building according to the needs of the Library.

Maintains an up-to-date, working knowledge of general and specialized Library and non-Library resources in order to answer simple to moderately difficult questions at the Access Services Desk.

Responsible for shelf maintenance, including but not limited to verifying student shelf reading progress, and working closely with the

Student Supervisors to ensure shelf reading is done correctly and training of students completed. Performs shelf maintenance for the organization of the Library’s physical items.

Conducts formal and informal networking and outreach to develop innovative approaches for the Library and its staff to address the needs of students.

Collaborates with colleagues to plan and enact strategies to support the University’s mission and student success framework in the Library building, and through its resources and services.

Processes Texshare, Community User, and Alumni cards when other staff is not present. Staff member will be efficient at the preparation of Texshare, Community User, and Alumni cards, statistics, and understanding of the prerequisites related to the program.

Perform cash box reconciliation as part of the closing procedures for the Access Services Department when other staff is not present.

Participates in team and committee work to contribute to ongoing projects in the Access Services Department.

Participates in Library-wide activities.

Operates the library alarm, and security.

Serves on committees as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned

Supervise and forward police reports to direct supervisor. Ensures that all information obtained is accurate and relevant to the situation.

Will become proficient in the Alma library management system.

Will become proficient in the use of Springshare platform tools such as LibGuides and LibAnswers.

Assist with Carrel Sweeps.

Periodic evening and weekend work as required.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

and

Experience: Two years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong service orientation.

Ability to consistently interact positively with students and colleagues in the library.

Preferred Qualifications:

Maximum 2 years full-time library experience or in a customer relations setting.

Minimum 2 years supervisory experience of four or more individuals.

Minimum 1 year of inventory management or related experience.

Library experience with shelving and stack maintenance.

Library experience, especially in a circulation department.

Training and evaluating of student assistants.

Experience with automated library systems or PC-based work.

Problem solving abilities.

Bilingual ability, Spanish English, desirable
