Position Summary
The City of North Sioux City is seeking a Library Director to lead the North Sioux City Community Library, a small public library serving as a vital community hub. This position is responsible for the overall administration, operations, and public service functions of the library. The Library Director serves as both an organizational leader and a working director, actively involved in day-to-day library operations while providing strategic direction and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all library operations, including public service, programming, collection development, technology, facilities, and administrative functions.
- Provides hands-on leadership in a small-staff environment, including direct assistance to patrons and support of daily library activities.
- Prepares and manages the library budget; oversees purchasing and financial tracking.
- Works collaboratively with the Library Board, City Administrator, and City departments.
- Ensures compliance with applicable state library standards, accreditation requirements, and city policies.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with community members, schools, and local organizations.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates library staff.
- Plans and implements programs and services that reflect community needs.
- Oversee library policies, procedures, and long-range planning efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in library science, education, public administration, humanities, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible public library experience.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a public library setting, preferably in a small, rural, or single-branch library.
- Demonstrated experience performing a wide range of library functions, including direct public service.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adapt in a resource-limited environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a library director, branch manager, or lead staff member in a small or rural public library.
- Experience working with a library board or governing body.
- Familiarity with municipal operations, budgeting, and public-sector procedures.
- Knowledge of state library services, standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to long-term community engagement and public service.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to balance administrative leadership with hands-on operational responsibilities.
- Strong customer service skills and a public-service mindset.
- Practical understanding of the role of a small public library as a community resource.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Willingness to perform a broad range of duties as required in a small-staff environment.
- Work is performed primarily in a public library setting and includes frequent interaction with the public. The position may require standing, walking, lifting materials, and assisting with physical library tasks.
Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time position
- Evening and weekend hours are required as needed.
- Salary range: $49,420 to $67,475 per year
