Library Service Clerk - Ashwaubenon Branch

Library Clerks work with library customers and materials throughout the circulation process: from checking out items to customers, to ensuring materials are returned neat and orderly to their location. Responsibilities also include assisting customers with basic circulation related duties as well as supporting the day to day operation of the branch or department. Clerks work under the general supervision of Library Service Associates, Librarians, and Managers to perform tasks essential to the day-to-day operations of the Library.

Typical Schedule:
Position 1
Monday - Wednesday: 3:00 pm - 8:15 pm
Saturday: 9:15 am - 2:15 pm

Position 2
Monday - Friday: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Essential Duties

1. Perform general circulation and customer service functions.
  • Greet customers in friendly and professional manner
  • Check in and out library materials accurately and efficiently
  • Prepare and process delivery among library locations
  • Process holds, includes placing holds, receiving holds, making holds available for pickup
  • Use the Library catalog or circulation system to search for items
  • Receive and process payments
  • Register users, process new library card applications accurately, and activate new cards
  • Answer basic customer questions
  • Refer advanced customer questions to other staff as appropriate
  • Provide assistance with computers
  • Assist customers in finding specific items on shelves
2. Maintain the order and neatness of collections throughout the Library
  • Re-shelve library materials to the proper locations and shift as necessary
  • Ensure that materials are in the correct order on the shelves (Shelf Reading)
  • Maintain attractiveness of the Library by picking up materials from seating areas, straightening shelves and filling displays
  • Perform basic cleaning and repair of library materials
3. Assist library staff with other branch or department functions
  • Assist with development, implementation, and execution of library programs under the guidance of a Library Service Associate, Librarian, and/or Manager
  • Promote library programs, resources, and services to customers
  • Search for library materials as instructed
  • Perform duties related to library opening and closing
  • Reports customer behavior issues to associate level staff or higher
  • Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings, as well as training sessions
  • Perform other related duties as needed or assigned

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effectively administer Brown County Library policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Perform accurate cash handling
  • Sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order, and develop a working understanding of the methods for arranging library materials
  • Re-shelve returned materials quickly and correctly, achieving an average rate of speed of at least 75 items re-shelved per hour and an average accuracy rate of 97%
  • Represent the Library in a responsible, professional, and trustworthy manner
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base
  • Effectively use excellent customer service and communication skills when interacting with co-workers and customers
  • Remain calm during stressful situations
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Appropriately multitask and prioritize
  • Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail
  • Follow detailed verbal and written instructions
  • Perform repetitive, routine procedures
  • Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing, and email
  • Effectively use library and general office equipment, including but not limited to computer, library specific software programs and databases, self-check station, Automated Materials Handling system, printer, photocopier, telephone and cash drawer
