Job Description

Rappahannock Community College (RCC), founded in 1970, provides high-quality educational and training opportunities throughout a 12-county service region an hour east of Richmond on the beautiful western shore of the Chesapeake Bay with access to fresh local seafood and water activities. RCC delivers accessible and affordable educational opportunities, including for-credit transfer and career technical programs, robust distance education coursework, quality dual enrollment courses, and award-winning workforce training and credentialing programs. RCC’s annualized enrollment of 3,700 credit students in 2024-2025 and almost 800 workforce and community development students are supported by almost 140 full-time employees and over 200 part-time/adjunct employees across two main campuses and five satellite sites.

RCC seeks applicants for our Library Specialist position at our Warsaw campus. This is a 29-hour per week, part-time staff position without benefits. The anticipated hourly pay rate will be commensurate with experience but no less than $17.00 per hour. The incumbent will need to work a late shift until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Reporting to the Coordinator of Learning Resources, this position will provide circulation and basic reference services to students, faculty and community patrons. High-quality customer service is essential for success in this position.
Duties include:
  • Providing assistance to the Coordinator of Learning Resources with projects, clerical duties, and organizing materials
  • Interacting with patrons professionally, effectively, and courteously
  • Using the Integrated Library System (Alma) to perform circulation duties
  • Managing patron accounts (debts, etc.) within Alma
  • Opening and closing the library when necessary
  • Informing patrons of library policies
  • Using electronic and print information sources to answer basic reference questions
  • Maintaining familiarity with the collection, library website, research guides and subject databases
  • Assisting students with applicable software applications
  • Shelving and maintaining reference, reserve, circulating, and periodical materials
  • Working a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Experience using a variety of computer applications and software
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new technologies
  • Ability to perform duties accurately with attention to detail, and in a timely manner
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to navigate an alpha-numeric shelving system
  • Library work experience preferred
  • Possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for training and experience.
