The Hall County Library System is seeking a Library Supervisor for the Spout Springs branch. This position acts as second to the branch manger, as well as taking the lead on adult programs for the location. This position assists the branch head with the planning, execution, and promotion of library service. Responsibilities include direct patron service; planning, implementation, and evaluation of library programs; and responsibility for overseeing the staff and daily activities of a department or branch. Reports to the branch manager.
Examples of Work:
- Provides daily assistance in finding appropriate materials and information for patrons using electronic databases, Internet, as well as traditional print sources, and provides readers advisory service.
- Plans, prepares, promotes, and delivers programs in the library and in other locations.
- Works a minimum of one outreach event per year.
- Participates in collection development including selecting new materials using established library procedures and professional resources, checking in new materials, and examining new materials for content and proper placement in the collection.
- Assists in collection maintenance including shelving, reading shelves, weeding, repairing materials, and dealing with damaged and missing items.
- Performs circulation activities including checking materials in and out, placing holds, collecting fines, and issuing library cards.
- Promotes patron interest through creation of displays and bibliographies.
- Oversees the daily activities of the department or branch.
- Hires, trains and evaluates staff in conjunction with the department or branch head.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:
- Subject to evening and weekend assignments. This position is considered non-exempt.
Staff Development Requirements:
- Completes 20 contact hours of continuing education per year.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable ability to understand and use electronic catalog, circulation, and patron record computer programs as well as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing programs.
- Considerable ability to understand and use reference tools in book form and in online databases.
- Basic clerical skills including understanding of alphabetical and numerical order with an understanding of and ability to use the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
- Understanding of the principles and methods of modern library services.
- Ability to select materials using professional review sources and to enter selections into an online collection development database and ordering system.
- Considerable ability to communicate with the public.
- Ability to make decisions within stated guidelines and to work independently in a wide variety of situations.
- Ability to work as a cohesive team unit with department or branch head.
- Solid commitment to customer service, the protection of intellectual freedom, and the privacy rights of library users.
- Considerable ability to communicate with staff and make assignments in a competent, effective, and fair manner.
- Ability to develop staff through training and performance reviews.
- Orders and maintains supplies for the department.
- Ability to lift 10 pounds with occasional lifting of heavier items up to 25 pounds and push a cart with up to 100 pounds on it.
- Ability to bend knees, stretch and lift up to 3 pounds overhead.
- Ability to sit in an office chair for an extended period of time.
Required Education, Training, Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of experience or HS diploma/GED with 3 years of experience required.
