Job Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Supplier Quality Engineer supports Magna Corporate and Engineered Glass Quality Systems by driving quality standards throughout the supply base and ensuring compliance with IATF16949, customer requirements, and Magna standards. This role evaluates and selects suppliers, leads supplier improvement initiatives, conducts audits, and manages PPAP activities for new product launches and engineering changes. The Supplier Quality Engineer also supports problem-solving efforts, utilizes corporate quality tools (QPF, eRFX), and may provide direction to other staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans and supports Magna Corporate Supplier Quality and Engineered Glass Quality Systems to drive improvement of products purchased by the Engineered Glass. Drives Corporate and Engineered Glass Quality standards onto the supply base and ensures compliance.
  • Evaluates and participates in the select of suppliers which may include the assessment of current suppliers, potentially new suppliers and new supplier technology.
  • Formulates and/or assists in formulating internal supplier quality policies and processes based upon IATF16949, customer specific requirements and Magna quality standards.
  • Champions continuous improvement efforts of suppliers by leading supplier improvement projects/programs for underperforming suppliers including the auditing activities of supplier Quality Systems.
  • Serves as a resource by providing a problem solving function by initiating action to overcome obstacles as they are encountered.
  • Participates in launch phase of new products or engineering changes affecting suppliers through supplier PPAP activities including the review and approval or rejection of supplier PPAPs.
  • Uses Magna Corporate Supplier Quality systems, currently QPF and eRFX to conduct applicable activities.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
  • May supervise and/or provide work direction to other staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
  • Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment, demonstrating flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs and priorities.
  • The following duties will be performed at all levels within the progression.
    • At level I, work is primarily routine and focused on daily workflow requirements that may involve detailed engineering assignments. Guidance is provided either by instruction received on specific assignment objectives by reporting Manager, and maybe complex and require possible solutions. Required to work independently evaluating, selecting, and applying established and well-defined engineering techniques, procedures, policies or systems. Decisions involve limited risk to the organization. Primarily involves entry through intermediate level work.
    • At level II, work is moderately complex and difficult in character and requires program/project management skills. Functioning as a highly competent engineer, work requires independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard company procedures and translation of technical guidance from higher level personnel into data applicable to tasks. Decisions involve moderate risk to the organization although results may have a long-lasting impact. Primarily involves intermediate through advanced level work, moving toward complete technical competency and mastery of the field. Work often includes working with multidepartment Management and staffs.
    • At level III, work requires independent problem solving and decision making with general direction given on project objectives and broad guidance from corporate strategy and goals. Work is complex, difficult in character and requires strong technical and broad business knowledge in addition to program/project management skills. Functioning with full competency/mastery of work areas, exercises considerable latitude in determining specific project objectives and approaches to assignments. Decisions often involve substantial risk to the organization with potential for long-lasting results.

REQUIREMENTS:

Level 1:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering, Quality or science field with understanding of Quality Engineering practices, principles, processes, etc.; or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, coordinate, integrate internal data, and clearly articulate concepts, ideas, and other issues relating to Quality Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on moderate to long-term assignments which are broad in nature. Strong organizational, project management, and leadership skills to prioritize, coordinate projects, manage conflicting needs, and deal with many issues at one time. Must be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts and represent the Company in a professional manner when performing job duties.
  • Strong computer background with ability to calculate and analyze data, generate reports, present information, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and recommend new suppliers, products and processes. Must be able to initiate implementation of continuous improvement processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in manufacturing environments.
  • English proficiency required, with strong verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Level 2:

  • Meets all Level 1 requirements plus:
  • Minimum three years’ experience in Quality Engineering or Management. Must have thorough and complete knowledge of the Quality field. Must be broadly familiar with Quality Systems, technologies, products, and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on long-term assignments, broad in nature. Must be able to work independently with some latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage several large and complex projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others through support, training, etc.

Level 3:

  • Meets all Level 2 requirements plus:
  • Minimum eight years of Quality Engineering or Management experience with technical expertise in functional area and full competency/mastery of work area.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills. Must be able to work independently with considerable latitude for unreviewed action.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office Environment: est. 75%
  • Plant Environment: est. 25%
  • The employee must be able to tolerate sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • It requires (Near/Far/Depth/Color) vision in order to be able to tolerate the eye strain associated with working on a computer throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to tolerate the use of a keyboard and mouse on average of 6 hours per workday.
  • While working in the Plant environment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes, and various levels of temperature created by the manufacturing process.
  • This role operates primarily in a manufacturing facility. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings, visit suppliers, or other specific purposes related to the role. Travel requirements for this position are estimated at 10 – 25% of time and may include both domestic and/or international destinations as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Prolonged standing at least 8 hours, but up to 12 hours per day
  • Lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds multiple times per hour.
  • Repetitive bending, twisting, turning, lifting.
  • Repetitive use of hands, including gripping, grasping, pinching, squeezing
