Essential Job Duties

  • Performs troubleshooting, maintenance, and mechanical repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fork trucks, vacuum pumps, fluid pumps, presses, air compressors, elevators, water and sewage treatment equipment, cafeteria and laundry equipment, special tooling, jacks, portable hydraulic equipment, cranes, aerial lifting devices, and other items pertaining to mechanical maintenance responsibilities.
  • Performs millwright work and rigging associated with off-loading, moving, and transporting equipment to job sites. Installs and performs precision alignment of a variety of equipment and machinery such as lathes, drill presses, production processing equipment, gear boxes, and pumps. Performs limited welding, pipe fitting, electrical, and other craft functions.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections, capacity tests, and certification of lifting devices.
  • Fabricates slings, splices cables, and repairs lifting devices used at the Plant.
  • Determines methods best suited to safely move loads using rigging knowledge of roping and rigging sheaves, blocks, pulleys, and booms, as well as the load limits of these items.
  • Selects and attaches proper lifting and grappling equipment and directs the lifting and moving of loads using standard hand signals.
  • Sets up braces and rigs hoisting equipment for erecting and dismantling of machinery and heavy objects.
  • Erects and hangs working platforms. Sheaves and runs manila and wire rope for operation of power equipment.
  • Makes necessary attachment of chains, ropes, and cables to move heavy loads safely.
  • Possesses necessary skills to use required testers, measuring devices, tools and special equipment to accomplish work assignments.
  • Must be adept in the use of precision tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, and vernier calipers
  • Must be proficient in reading blue prints for assembly and maintenance purposes.
  • Ensures accurate and efficient replacement of parts and makes repairs and/or adjustments to equipment and systems.
  • Performs duties under the direction of line management.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of accurate records.
  • Adheres to Safety, Fire, and Security regulations.
  • Must be able to work alone or with others as the job and safe work practices require.
  • Responsible for the safe operation and proper care of materials, tools and equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Department of Energy (DOE), Corporate and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 426.2), and Management.
  • Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
  • Understands a worker’s right to stop work when they feel their own or other’s personal safety is jeopardized.
  • Attends all required safety meetings and training. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.

  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
  • Must have successfully completed a four (4) year Pantex approved Apprenticeship which provides experience directly related to the work currently performed by the Area Mechanic Shop, or have four (4) years’ experience satisfactory to the Area Mechanic Shop Supervisor and/or the Maintenance Department Manager in the performance of current Area Mechanic Shop work as stated in the functions and responsibilities of this job description.
  • Must have a valid State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

DOE Order 426.2 Requirements

  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., 1 year maintenance-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2)

Notes

  • Requires a Q clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
  • Requires Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification. If the successful candidate is not currently certified in the HRP, the certification process will be initiated upon assumption of the position. If the successful candidate is currently certified in the HRP, a review for HRP certification in the appropriate category will be performed by the hiring manager and the HRP Management Official, and the certification process in the appropriate category will be initiated upon assumption of the position.
