Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing semi-skilled and skilled work in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of city streets, parks, and right-of-ways, city equipment, vehicles, grounds and buildings as well as caring for the condition of the ice surface. Work is characterized by tasks of more than ordinary difficulty requiring special skills or knowledge. Work of this class is distinguished from Maintenance I in that employees of this class may serve in a lead capacity, be assigned as primary operator of motorized equipment having complex operating requirements or perform specialized work of equivalent difficulty or responsibility. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through periodic observation and completed assignments.
Work Schedule: Full Time: Primarily weekdays; Evenings and weekends dependent upon special events and emergencies.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties, responsibilities and expectations are not necessarily limited to the following, and are not enumerated in any particular order or priority. At any particular time the frequency or duration with which one or more of the following specific duties is performed may vary widely.
- Maintains city equipment and facilities; performs semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, carpentry, tree trimming, chipping brush, concrete / asphalt repairs, curb and sidewalk repairs, sewer work, grass cutting, landscaping and masonry work.
- Inspects park facilities and equipment to determine care, maintenance and repair work required; determines materials needed and most efficient method to accomplish work.
- Picks up and hauls trash and debris from assigned areas; loads and unloads trucks; sweeps indoor and paved outdoor areas.
- Cuts grass/weeds; trims and removes trees, tree debris, and tree stumps; grades, weeds, seeds, fertilizes, and waters landscape; plants and prunes trees; cleans restrooms, shop areas, buildings, vehicles and equipment.
- operates trucks with snow plow, or salt spreader, pickup truck, dump truck, tractor, power mower and other motorized equipment as needed
- Paints city buildings; prepares athletic fields and sets up equipment for sporting or recreational events.
- Assists in the servicing and minor repair of city vehicles and equipment. Maintains tools in proper working condition; maintains supplies.
- Sets up and takes down rooms for renters; ensures rental equipment is in working order and returned after each use.
- Maintains ice condition which includes edging, resurfacing and painting the ice surface.
- Cleans and removes debris from rink lobby, rink area, meeting rooms, rest rooms, locker rooms, and offices, bleachers, building grounds, parking lot, walls, windows, floors and other areas as assigned.
- Serves as lead of a crew on an assigned basis in the absence of a Crew Leader; supervises assigned staff and seasonal employees.
- Performs related work as required by Public Works Superintendent.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with tools, materials, methods, and practices used in ice, park, street, city and vehicle maintenance and repair
- Proficiency in methods, materials, and practices used in the construction and automotive trades
- Proficient in the operation of hand and power tools and some motorized equipment
- Skill in safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment in difficult conditions
- Ability to learn vehicle, parks and building maintenance and repair methods, practices and techniques
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, city officials and the general public
- Ability to perform sanitation duties as needed
Minimum Requirements – Education, Certification, and Experience
- Graduation from a general or technical high school, or GED
- Must have a valid Missouri Class ‘B’ Commercial Driver’s License with air breaks
- Insurable with the City's insurance carrier
Preferred Qualifications – Education, Certification, and Experience
- Supplemental vocational courses
- Considerable experience in performing tasks related to the area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience
