Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III (Public Works)

General Summary



This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity:
  • Maintenance Worker II: preferred hiring range is $19.12 to $21.19 an hour ($39,769.60 - $44,075.20 Annually).
  • Maintenance Worker III: preferred hiring range is $20.45 to $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 Annually).
The Maintenance Worker II performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.

Assignment: This position will fill one of the following assignments based on operational and department need (work schedules cited below are subject to change):
  • Sidewalks Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday - Friday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
  • Concrete Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday : 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM - This position is part of a dedicated Concrete Crew responsible for supporting Capital Improvement Projects related to sidewalk repair and construction throughout the City. Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
  • Street Marking/Asphalt Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Thursday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and repair of City streets to include repairing potholes, utility cuts and street marking.
  • Refuse Collection & Disposal Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday – Friday : 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM - Under the direction of the Refuse Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in the collection and disposal of solid waste throughout the City.

As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assists with maintenance, repair, and/or construction projects.
  • Supports and completes maintenance and repair assignments according to required specifications.
  • Supports the preparation of job sites for the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and/or grounds.
  • Assists senior workers in semiskilled work, emergency operations, and other tasks.
  • Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with maintenance, repair, custodial, and construction operations.
  • Conducts cleanup and restoration work on assignments.
  • Attends meetings concerning safety, procedures, and practices.
  • May operate a vehicle in the performance of duties.
  • Subject to be called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public. Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.


  • High school diploma or GED AND general knowledge of maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
OR
  • One (1) year of work experience in general maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (For Utilities 40-minute response time)
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical and drug test.
  • May require a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
  • May require ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement.
  • May require ability to obtain Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Basic level certification.
  • May be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Reading
  • Basic: ability to understand the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs. Comprehends simple written instructions, work orders, construction plans, drawings, signs, and notices.

  • Basic: writing skill to provide information, documentation, and/or record on maintenance needs, repairs, and/or series of numbers and addresses.
Math
  • Basic: ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.

  • Routine: Regular & routine interaction involving providing or exchanging basic information, explain issues and concerns, listen to others and to identify maintenance and repair issues or problems. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers.
Independence and Decision-Making
  • Requires Immediate Direction: Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.

  • Basic: understanding to be able to provide preventive and routine maintenance and repair of assigned area.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical Demands:


  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to perform extensive manual labor for extended periods including balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking pushing/pulling, heavy lifting, gross and fine motor skills. Adequate vision and hearing.
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information involving position duties.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires operation of construction, repair, and specialized equipment; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed outside, in a vehicle, or on equipment where there is exposure to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, dirt and allergens, fumes or airborne particulars, fuels/gases, electrical currents, chemicals, high/precarious places, traffic/roadways, moving mechanical hazards, confined spaces, and uneven terrain.
  • Expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
  • The noise level is usually loud to very loud.
