Research, Innovation and Economic Development at the University at Buffalo seeks a Scientific Writer and Marketing Communicator to produce clear, compelling content that elevates UB’s research enterprise. The role focuses on translating complex scientific concepts into accessible stories and internal communications that inform and engage UB researchers, leadership and key external audiences, supporting research growth, productivity, compliance and collaboration. The ideal candidate has experience managing and repackaging content across multiple communications channels and understands best practices. A team player, the candidate thrives in a collaborative marketing environment, demonstrates strong storytelling and editing skills, manages multiple projects and deadlines effectively and partners with subject matter experts to highlight breakthrough research, faculty expertise and economic impact.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop internal communications narratives that explain and promote UB’s research administration support infrastructure, services and strategies to researchers and leadership.
- Create comprehensive narratives that connect UB’s research enterprise to the broader external community, emphasizing impact, partnerships and societal benefit across UB’s schools and colleges.
- Identify high‑impact story opportunities aligned with ORIED’s mission and priorities, and craft clear, engaging content on scientific discoveries and innovations that advance society.
- Research, write and edit stories across scientific domains, with emphasis on technologies such as AI, quantum science, translation and commercialization activity.
- Conduct interviews with faculty experts, innovators and partners to produce case studies and accessible content for web, email, presentations, social media and other marketing channels.
- Collaborate with colleagues (including communications coordinators, designers and digital staff) to plan and maintain editorial calendars and adapt core stories for specific channels.
- Ensure content accuracy, adhere to UB brand and style guidelines, and apply SEO best practices for digital content.
- Lead the development of written content for collateral and materials (e.g., one‑pagers, reports, presentations) that support strategic initiatives, proposals and key events.
