Managing Director of Governance & Policy
Mission:
The Managing Director of Governance & Policy is the internal expert of board operations, sets expectations for all IDEA board members and officers including IDEA's fiduciary boards, and manages the facilitation of board approved policies. The MD ensures that the team operates with excellence so that all board members and officers can fulfill their obligations and duties. The MD ensures that IDEA has impeccable operating systems, including resources for required board member and officer training, meeting preparation, and board archival services.
Additionally, the MD of Governance & Policy recognizes that the work of the board does not start or end at a board meeting. The MD ensures that organization-wide systems inform IDEA of the decisions made by the fiduciary boards, provide accurate records and evidence of board decisions, and direct accurate implementation of board decisions, including the execution of board approved policies. The MD models integrity, systems-orientation, and details-management in their own work and expectations for others.

Location:
This is a full-time remote position based in Texas with preference given to candidates who live in Austin, El Paso, Houston, Permian Basin (Midland/Odessa), Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Tarrant County (Fort Worth), or who are willing to relocate.
Travel Expectations:
This is a remote position with minimal travel
What You’ll Do – Accountabilities
Essential Duties:
- Ensure that the team operates with excellence so that all board members and officers can fulfill their obligations and duties.
- Ensures that IDEA has impeccable operating systems, including resources for required board member and officer training, meeting preparation, and board archival services.
- Ensures that organization-wide systems inform IDEA of the decisions made by the fiduciary boards, provide accurate records and evidence of board decisions, and direct accurate implementation of board decisions, including the execution of board approved policies.
- Models’ integrity, systems-orientation, and detail-management in their own work and expectations for others.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set vision and direction for policy work at IDEA so that internal stakeholders and external partners say “I know that policy, it lives here, and it means” by knowing how to access the current and historical versions of all policies, are able to access the tools and resources to understand what the current policies mean, and can correctly describe (and then execute) the policy process for creation or revision that is needed
- Ensure organization builds systems where all policies have historical versions that are accurately cataloged, have implementation plans that outline the development of policy aligned administrative procedures and trainings and a process by which policies may be revised and or created due to changes in legislation.
- Successfully manage the Director of Organizational Policy Implementation to roles, responsibilities, and outcomes leading to fulfillment of overall vision for policy work
- Collaborate with leaders of Legal Affairs and Regulatory Affairs to ensure that policy updates due to legislation changes and corresponding actions needed are accurately identified
- Inform staff members why policy work is important by partnering with departments to explain the rationale and case for a policy or practice, and socializes the organizational leaders to the vision, strategic plan, and systems for policy work
- Bring, embody, and spread a culture of joy amongst policy owners
- Set vision and direction for building systems for board operations, such that all stakeholders know expectations for engaging with IDEA boards and committees, and meeting their needs
- Build the vision, direction, and systems such that the national team can clearly access boards and board team to execute on the work
- Ensure Board Members at IDEA can access, review, and engage with materials sufficiently in advance of committee meetings to fulfill their fiduciary requirements and obligations with confidence and ease
- Ensure all meetings meet legal and compliance standards, across all entities
- Ensure all meeting materials are archived in systems such that records are appropriately maintained internally and externally
- Build and manage to ensure that IDEA has robust board recruitment and board onboarding practices, tools and resources for supporting other stakeholders in doing so.
- Ensure items presented to the board have gone through appropriate internal review and legal review, as necessary.
- Ensure appropriate standard operating procedures are in place to ensure that all affected parties internally have reviewed and approved items as board ready
- Ensure items have been reviewed and recommended by legal counsel for board review and adoption
- Manage processes to ensure efficiencies internally and with external counsel, minimizing excess legal cost
- Build systems, structures, training plans and accountability mechanisms to ensure all board members and officers meet annual training requirements (TX = governance training, example)
- Set vision and direction for governance training to ensure that it is robust, aligned and accessible
- Voice governance training requirements to board members and provide training opportunities in Texas
- Ensure, in partnership with the Superintendent and CEO, that board members feel board trainings are high quality, relevant and meet requirements of the law
- Partner with external institutions that offer training to identify ways to extend opportunities to IDEA leaders or bring best practices to IDEA

Additional Skills:
- Proficiency in full Microsoft platform
- Ability to learn and adapt to multiple state meeting requirements
- Ability to read and interpret code and legal language
Required experience:
- 7-10 years related experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
Physical Requirements:
- This is a sedentary position
- The ability to lift no more than 10 pounds at a time
- The ability to walk and stand for no more than 20 minutes at a time
What We Offer:
Compensation & Benefits:
Salaries for people entering this role typically fall between $119,000 and $142,800, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for performance pay based on organizational performance and goal attainment.
