Job Description: Mechanical Fitter (Valves & Pumps)

Industry: Water Supply & Water Infrastructure Projects
Department: Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
Reporting To: Site Engineer / Mechanical Supervisor

1. Job Summary

The Mechanical Fitter will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and overhauling of pumps, valves, and associated mechanical equipment used in water supply and distribution systems. The role involves ensuring continuous, safe, and efficient functioning of water infrastructure assets such as pump houses, booster stations, reservoirs, and pipelines.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Pumps & Pumping Systems

  • Installation, alignment, commissioning, and maintenance of centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, submersible pumps, and booster pumps.
  • Overhauling of pumps including replacement of bearings, seals, impellers, shafts, sleeves, and gaskets.
  • Checking pump performance parameters such as flow, head, vibration, noise, and leakage.
  • Lubrication and preventive maintenance as per O&M schedules.

B. Valves & Pipeline Accessories

  • Maintenance and repair of sluice valves, butterfly valves, air valves, NRVs, PRVs, and gate valves used in water supply networks.
  • Dismantling, servicing, lapping, and reassembly of valves.
  • Detection and rectification of leakages, pressure losses, and operational failures.
  • Operation of valves during line shutdowns, isolation, and emergency repairs.

C. Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance

  • Carrying out routine inspections and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment.
  • Attending breakdowns on priority basis to restore water supply at the earliest.
  • Identifying root causes of failures and suggesting corrective actions.
  • Maintaining minimum downtime of pumping systems.

D. Tools, Safety & Compliance

  • Proper use of mechanical tools such as spanners, torque wrenches, pullers, grinders, and measuring instruments.
  • Adherence to safety norms, use of PPE, and compliance with departmental safety instructions.
  • Ensuring safe working practices in confined spaces and pump houses.

E. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintaining maintenance registers, job cards, and daily work reports.
  • Reporting equipment condition, spare requirements, and work completion status to the supervisor.
  • Assisting engineers during inspections by government departments or municipal authorities.

3. Equipment Handled

  • Centrifugal & Vertical Turbine Pumps
  • Submersible & Booster Pumps
  • Sluice, Butterfly, Air & Non-Return Valves
  • Motors, Couplings, Bearings & Mechanical Seals
  • Pipelines & Pump House Mechanical Systems

4. Educational Qualification

  • ITI (Mechanical Fitter / Pump Mechanic / Diesel Mechanic / Turner) or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Certification from a recognized institute preferred.

5. Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in water supply, pumping stations, water works, or O&M projects.
  • Experience in municipal corporations, PHED, Jal Boards, or government water infrastructure projects will be an added advantage.

6. Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to read basic mechanical drawings and manuals.
  • Problem-solving skills for quick breakdown rectification.
  • Physical fitness for field and shift work.
  • Team-oriented with ability to work under pressure.

7. Working Conditions

  • Field-based role involving pump houses, reservoirs, and pipeline sites.
  • May require shift duties, night calls, and emergency response.
  • Exposure to water, noise, and heavy mechanical equipment.

8. Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in O&M contracts of water works, Ranney Wells, tube wells, and booster stations.
  • Familiarity with government safety and quality standards.
  • Long-term commitment for project-based employment.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: ₹18,500.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
