Mechanical Engineer (Acute Hospital & Maintenance Services)
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance & System Optimization:
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical systems within the hospital, including HVAC systems, plumbing, medical gas systems, and other essential mechanical infrastructure.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to ensure the continuous and safe operation of all mechanical systems.
- Oversee the maintenance of specialized hospital equipment and machinery, ensuring compliance with operational standards and safety regulations.
- System Design & Improvement:
- Analyze existing mechanical systems and suggest improvements or upgrades to enhance efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize performance.
- Work closely with hospital facilities management to design, implement, and upgrade systems in line with healthcare industry standards.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure that all mechanical systems comply with relevant healthcare standards, local building codes, and safety regulations (e.g., ASHRAE, NFPA).
- Stay updated on industry best practices, regulations, and certifications relevant to mechanical engineering in healthcare settings.
- Ensure compliance with hospital safety protocols and maintain proper documentation related to system inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Energy Efficiency & Sustainability:
- Identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency in hospital mechanical systems, contributing to the facility’s sustainability goals.
- Implement energy-saving measures in HVAC, lighting, and other mechanical systems where feasible.
- Troubleshooting & Emergency Response:
- Respond to mechanical emergencies and provide quick, efficient solutions to minimize downtime in critical hospital operations.
- Provide expertise in troubleshooting mechanical issues with hospital infrastructure, including urgent repairs when necessary.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with the hospital’s facilities management, clinical staff, and external contractors to coordinate maintenance activities, repairs, and upgrades.
- Provide technical support and training to hospital maintenance teams as needed.
- Communicate effectively with hospital leadership regarding system status, repairs, and improvements.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of all mechanical systems, maintenance activities, and repair work completed.
- Prepare and present reports on system performance, maintenance schedules, and issues to hospital management.
- Project Management:
- Manage and oversee small-scale mechanical engineering projects, including system installations, upgrades, and retrofits, ensuring timely completion and within budget.
Qualifications:
- Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering within an acute hospital or healthcare environment, with an emphasis on maintenance and service.
- Relevant certifications, such as HVAC certification, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or other industry-recognized credentials, are a plus.
- Knowledge of healthcare-specific mechanical systems (e.g., medical gas, sterilization equipment, HVAC, plumbing) is essential.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems used in healthcare environments, including HVAC, plumbing, medical gas systems, and fire safety systems.
- Hands-on experience in troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of hospital facilities management, healthcare regulatory requirements, and safety codes.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and other engineering design or analysis software.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess and resolve technical issues.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
