Mechanical Fitter - Hospital Background
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical System Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on mechanical systems such as HVAC systems, pumps, motors, compressors, and other essential hospital equipment.
- Install, inspect, and troubleshoot mechanical systems and machinery, ensuring proper operation and compliance with safety standards.
- Work on hospital-specific mechanical systems, including air handling units (AHUs), sterilization equipment, piping systems, and water systems.
- Installation & Assembly:
- Install new mechanical systems, equipment, and components, ensuring that all installations meet hospital standards and specifications.
- Assemble and align mechanical systems and subassemblies, including motors, gears, belts, and couplings.
- Repair & Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose mechanical failures, identify causes, and perform necessary repairs promptly to minimize disruption to hospital operations.
- Use diagnostic tools and techniques to troubleshoot mechanical issues effectively.
- Preventive Maintenance:
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, servicing, and cleaning of mechanical systems to ensure longevity and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns.
- Develop and follow maintenance schedules for mechanical equipment to ensure systems are operating efficiently and reliably.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper handling of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
- Adhere to all hospital safety protocols and mechanical system compliance standards to ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain a safe and organized work area, following all environmental, health, and safety guidelines.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspections, repairs, and parts replacement.
- Complete work orders and report on any issues, system performance, and progress on ongoing tasks to management.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with other maintenance and facilities management teams to coordinate repairs and upgrades on mechanical systems.
- Provide technical support to other departments and assist in the training of less experienced staff.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergency mechanical system failures, ensuring rapid resolution to minimize downtime and disruption in hospital services.
- Be available for on-call duties or overtime work as required, especially during critical system failures.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Suggest improvements to mechanical systems to increase reliability and efficiency.
- Contribute to sustainability efforts by identifying opportunities for energy savings, reduced consumption, and environmentally friendly practices.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years technical training in Mechanical Fitting or a related trade (e.g., NVQ Level 3, BTEC, City & Guilds, or equivalent certification).
- A minimum of 3 years hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance, with desirable experience in the hospital or healthcare service sector (not construction).
- Proven experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems such as HVAC, water systems, pumps, and motors.
- Certifications & Training:
- Relevant mechanical fitting certifications (e.g., City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering, NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Fitting, or equivalent).
- Certification in Health & Safety (e.g., IOSH, CSCS, First Aid).
- Experience with Legionella Control and hospital-specific mechanical systems is a plus.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, including HVAC, pumping systems, water treatment, sterilization systems, and mechanical systems maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
- Familiarity with hospital regulations and maintenance protocols for mechanical systems.
- Good understanding of preventive maintenance strategies, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices.
- Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment specific to mechanical systems.
