Who We Are
Sterling Vision is a privately owned and operated, physician-led ophthalmology and optometry group serving communities in Eugene, Springfield, Junction City and West Salem.
Position Overview
As a Medical Assistant - Ophthalmology and Optometry, you'll play a central role in delivering an exceptional patient experience — from workup to exam or surgery to follow-up. You'll support our clinical team across a range of diagnostic, administrative, and patient communication responsibilities. No two days are exactly the same, but your contributions are what make them work.
Investing in People Who Want to Grow
We're looking for people who are serious about a future in healthcare — not just filling a seat. In addition to experienced ophthalmic techs, this role is an ideal fit for ambitious pre-med, pre-nursing, and allied health students ready to build real clinical skills from day one. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with ophthalmologists and optometrists, gain hands-on diagnostic and patient care experience, and build the kind of résumé that stands out on healthcare program applications.
We invest in your trajectory. That means supported pathways to ophthalmic tech certification for those who want it, cross-training across clinical and administrative functions, and a team culture where your long-term goals matter.
Key Responsibilities
- Support physicians during patient examinations and procedures
- Perform patient workups: obtain medical history, document chief complaints, and prepare patients for treatment
- Conduct diagnostic testing
- Manage patient flow
- Scribe for physicians, accurately documenting patient encounters in the EHR
- Ensure exam rooms are properly stocked, clean, and ready for the next patient
- Return patient calls promptly; triage questions and route appropriately
- Manage appointments and patient follow-up tasks with accuracy and professionalism
- Verify patient information and insurance details
- Maintain accurate patient files and documentation in compliance with practice standards
Job Requirements - What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Genuine interest in healthcare and patient care — this is not a job to pass the time
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills — patients and team members will rely on you
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment without sacrificing accuracy or warmth
- Computer proficiency: ability to type 40 words per minute, ability to learn EHR and practice management software quickly
- Reliable availability for regular shifts Monday-Friday
- Prior experience in a medical or ophthalmic setting is a plus, but not required
Core Competencies
- Clinical Judgment: Apply established protocols and guidelines to make sound decisions during patient interactions; escalate appropriately when needed.
- Problem Solving: Identify issues and resolve them efficiently using observation, experience, and team resources.
- Independence & Initiative: Set daily priorities, manage your workload proactively, and deliver results with minimal hand-holding.
- Communication: Communicate clearly and professionally — in writing and in person — with patients, families, colleagues, and external partners.
- Teamwork: Contribute actively to a team-first environment; share ideas, respect your colleagues, and elevate the people around you.
- Patient-Centered Service: Deliver consistent, compassionate care. Remain calm and solution-focused under pressure.
