Job Description : Medical Assistant

Reports to: Clinical Supervisor

Requirements:

  • Graduate of accredited High School, or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience
  • Must be able to read and communicate English language
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to traverse through multiple websites to locate information or upload information
  • Excellent telephone and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply policies and procedures
  • Efficiently multitask and remain organized

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this position successfully, the individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties: this is not an all-inclusive list.

  • Ability to work independently and in concert with patients, peers, and providers
  • Utilize personal initiative and maintain a steady level of productivity. Must be a self-starter and supportive team member. Be able to identify and address problems as they present.
  • Document patient contact and phone calls in the EMR. Direct phone calls appropriately. Communicate complete and accurate information to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner
  • Accurate computer operation, medical record maintenance, confidentiality, and phone skills
  • Assist in assessing the needs of patients, their families, and the clinic
  • Manage patient flow when patients are scheduled for office visits
  • Assist patients to exam rooms and aide providers as needed during examinations
  • Prepare records for upcoming office visits based on office guidelines. Check for outstanding labs, x-rays, and consults/referrals. Review previous office notes to determine tests required at the time of service. Check for upcoming patient recalls and order appropriate tests based on existing recalls
  • Maintains and stock examination rooms. Sanitize touched surfaces after a patient’s visit is complete. Empty trash weekly and as needed
  • Obtain vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight. Record vital signs and perform medication reconciliation
  • Ensure the patient information form (PIF) is complete and accurate. Transcribe the information into the EMR
  • Assist in prescribing and refilling patient medications as directed by providers
  • Manage patient’s prescriptions through electronic transmission and/or faxing. Routes electronic and patient refill requests to providers in a timely manner
  • Obtain prior authorizations for diagnostic procedures and medications as required
  • Performance reflects knowledge in all areas of care specific to outpatient/ambulatory GI care. Have knowledge of GI anatomy and physiology. Have an understanding of the various medications used to treat GI specific conditions. Anticipate exams, recalls, diagnostic orders and/or treatment procedures
  • Maintain electronic interface, route electronic test results to the ordering provider
  • Accurately scan lab and radiology results in the EMR when results are not available electronically
  • Update the EMR with appropriate electronic or scanned information/results
  • Obtain accurate history from patients calling to report updates, new concerns, or ongoing symptoms. Return calls to patients in a timely manner. Call patients with test results as advised by the clinician
  • Acknowledges patient’s rights on confidentiality issues. Always maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines and regulations
  • Cross train/cross coverage, as needed
  • Demonstrates flexibility and minimizes non-productive time. Fill slow periods with activities that enable you to meet other needs of the office (organizing, housekeeping, assisting others etc.)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.50 - $24.00 per hour
