Position Summary
The Medical Billing Specialist I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting accurate and timely billing operations. This position performs essential medical billing and administrative functions including data entry, insurance verification, claim submission, payment processing, and customer service support. The Medical Billing Specialist I works under direct supervision and follows established workflows and payer guidelines to support efficient revenue cycle operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Enter patient, insurance, and billing information accurately into the EHR and/or practice management system
- Verify patient eligibility, benefits, and coverage prior to and post service as needed
- Submit clean claims to insurance carriers electronically and/or by mail per payer guidelines
- Post and process payments accurately, including patient and insurance payments
- Support basic billing inquiries and patient account questions
- Answer incoming phones professionally and route calls appropriately
- Review clinical records/documentation and translate information accurately for billing entry and claim submission
- Follow established insurance guidelines and requirements including Medicare and Medicaid
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational policies
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy with data entry
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
- Good computer skills with the ability to learn multiple systems
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of medical billing and coding concepts (CPT/ICD-10 basics)
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow workflows and receive feedback/coaching
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required (medical billing coursework or certification preferred)
- 1–2 years of experience in medical billing, healthcare administration, or similar support role (preferred)
- Basic familiarity with EHR and practice management systems preferred
- Basic knowledge of insurance plans and guidelines, particularly Medicare and Medicaid preferred
