QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or medical laboratory science from an accredited college or university. Current national certification or licensure at the Technologist/Scientist level by an accredited credentialing agency or proof of qualification to sit for MLS examination within 3 months of hire.
Preferred: Code Gray certification.
Lic/Reg/Cert: MT or MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Produces Accurate Results with Minimal Clerical/Data Entry Errors Including Omissions: Reviews and evaluates test results prior to release. Recognizes suspect results based on laboratory defined criteria, system appended alerts, inconsistency with previous results, or professional judgment. Consults with clinicians and colleagues in the investigation and identification of possible sources of error or interferences that may impact test performance or compromise test results. Reports all critical test values to appropriate individuals. Tests completed in an efficient manner according to established time frames (STATS, timed tests). No more than one error per year requiring written corrective action.
- Assures Quality of Results Reported through Quality Control(QC) Procedures: Is responsible for performing procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance and preventative maintenance according to laboratory protocols. Ensures that analytic instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. Adheres to laboratory quality control policies and documents all QC activities. Follows protocols for running controls and verifying QC results. Participates in proficiency testing. Notifies department coordinators of out-of-control, discrepant or unexpected results within expected time frames. Follows the Laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the Laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Performs Clinical Laboratory Testing in a Safe and Efficient Manner: Begins duties immediately upon reporting to work. Procedures performed in accordance with approved procedure manual. Ability to organize and prioritize work flow during heavy workload situations. Prioritizes/reorganizes workload in response to STAT requests. Monitors inventory of supplies for areas worked, communicates shortages to the department coordinator. Learns new procedures/assignments in reasonable time frame. Maintains clean and orderly work environment. Performs all specimen handling, specimen manipulation, reagent preparation, test system maintenance, and testing procedures in a manner that ensures the safety of self and others.
- Promotes Patient Safety Goals: All employees are responsible for patient safety. Understand the importance of reporting errors and near misses to protect and improve patient care. Follows established Red Rules for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling.
