Description:

The Medical Scribe provides direct support to colorectal surgeons and advanced practice providers by accurately documenting patient encounters in real time within the electronic medical record (EMR). This role enhances provider efficiency and ensures accurate, thorough medical documentation in a fast-paced surgical specialty environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and comfortable working in a clinical setting involving sensitive gastrointestinal and colorectal conditions.

Key Responsibilities
Accompany providers into exam rooms and document patient history, review of systems, physical examinations, procedures, and treatment plans in real time

Accurately enter orders, diagnoses, and follow-up instructions as directed by the provider

Ensure completion and accuracy of medical records in compliance with regulatory and billing requirements

Assist with documenting minor in-office procedures and surgical consultations

Retrieve and organize lab results, imaging, pathology reports, and prior medical records for provider review

Coordinate with clinical staff to ensure seamless patient flow

Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times

Assist with chart preparation prior to clinic sessions
Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred

Prior medical scribe experience strongly preferred (surgical specialty experience a plus)

Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and colorectal/GI terminology preferred

Experience working with electronic medical records (eClinicalWorks, Athena, Epic, etc.)

Strong typing skills (minimum 60 WPM preferred)

Excellent listening skills and attention to detail

Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment

Professional demeanor and comfort discussing sensitive medical topics

Knowledge & Skills
Understanding of colorectal conditions (hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, IBD, colon cancer, etc.) preferred

Strong organizational and time-management skills

Ability to maintain accuracy under pressure

Excellent communication skills

Team-oriented with a positive, patient-centered approach

Physical & Work Environment
Prolonged periods of standing and walking during clinic sessions

Extended computer use

May be exposed to bodily fluids and clinical environments
