Salary Range: $50,000 - $90,000 , commensurate with experience.

Edmonds Cofield Preparatory Academy for Young Men (EC Prep) is New Haven’s first dedicated middle school for young men. About the Opportunity

We are seeking a passionate, mission-driven Founding Science Teacher to join our team at EC Prep. As a founding teacher, you will have the unique opportunity to build a joyful, rigorous classroom culture from the ground up while shaping the school’s academic model and student experience. You will be part of a collaborative team that sets a high bar for excellence, believes deeply in the potential of every young man, and is committed to creating a school where boys are seen, known, and celebrated. In this founding role you will help launch and lead our school community, while delivering high-quality instruction, fostering strong classroom relationships, and helping to establish the norms, rituals, and academic expectations that will define EC Prep both next year and beyond.

As a member of the founding team, you will play an integral role in setting the foundation and building the legacy of EC Prep. As a founding math teacher, you will play a critical role in laying the groundwork for mission-driven, academic ,and programmatic excellence, as well as positioning the school community for future success as the school grows to serve grades 5–8 in Connecticut’s first single-gendered, all-boys, public charter school.

Key Responsibilities of the Role

As a Founding Science Teacher Grade Teacher, you will be primarily responsible for:

Instructional Excellence

  • Plan and intellectually prepare for highly engaging, academically rigorous curriculum and lessons, aligned with ECS and ECP standards, curriculum, and deeper learning pedagogical philosophy
  • Deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that supports all students to achieve ambitious academic outcomes
  • Build strong, affirming relationships with students that create safe spaces for all boys to push themselves and motivate them to deeply invest and engage in their learning
  • Integrate culturally responsive and gender-relevant practices to make learning relevant and empowering
  • Use data and ongoing assessment to differentiate instruction and meet students’ diverse learning needs

Classroom Culture & School Community

  • Establish a structured, joyful, and safe classroom environment rooted in mutual respect and high expectations
  • Build strong, lasting relationships with students, inspiring them to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character
  • Reinforce EC Prep’s values and character development model to help boys grow as leaders and responsible young men
  • Partner with families to build trust, encourage student growth, and ensure shared ownership of student success
  • Contribute to the school community by attending school events, leading a club, reading group, athletic team, or other initiative

Collaboration and Ongoing Professional Development

  • Invest several hours per week in professional learning, including personalized instructional coaching, co-planning, department meetings, grade level meetings and other learning work
  • Collaborate with colleagues to build a positive, high-performing adult culture focused on continuous improvement
  • Share and receive feedback to improve instructional practice, support student achievement and co-create a strong and positive learning environment

Founding Responsibilities

  • Contribute actively to the design of academic systems, culture routines, community rituals and traditions, and enrichment experiences
  • Embrace feedback, adapt flexibly, and model a growth mindset in the face of change and challenge
  • Take ownership of school-wide initiatives and special projects as needed in a start-up environment

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate

While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Valid teaching certification or ability to obtain required certification upon employment (CT certification or eligibility for reciprocity required)
  • At least 2-3 years of teaching experience with a strong track record of student achievement
  • Ability to create a class environment in which students feel safe, supported and challenged to engage deeply in meaningful work
  • A strong sense of reflection and personal accountability for student growth, achievement and experience.
  • Deep understanding of, and genuine excitement for, working in both a founding school and a single-gender/all-boys school community
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity, youth development, social-emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Deep alignment with the mission and values of ECS and EC Prep, including a resolute and unshakable belief in the potential of every student to learn, grow and achieve at a high level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of teaching experience, with a strong track record of student achievement is preferred
  • Experience in an urban, high-expectations school setting. Experience in, and/or deep knowledge of the landscape and nuances of, charter schools is a plus
  • Experience teaching in a single-gender and/or founding school environment is highly preferred

Compensation and Benefits

At Elevate Charter Schools, we are committed to ensuring fair and equitable compensation based on the skills and qualifications required for the role. Our salaries are set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills, education, and years of experience relevant to the role.

The salary range for the Founding Year Science Teacher position is $50,500 to $90,000, commensurate with experience and qualification and reflective of the responsibilities and expertise needed to succeed in this position. Final salary may be adjusted based on experience and qualifications.
