Position Summary:

We are seeking an accomplished and innovative Nuclear Physicist specializing in high-energy plasma physics and fusion systems. The ideal candidate will lead pioneering research and development of advanced plasma confinement, ignition mechanisms, and propulsion systems for next-generation nuclear technologies. This role demands expertise in both experimental and computational plasma physics to drive breakthroughs in sustainable nuclear fusion and aerospace propulsion applications. Active TS/SCI CI security clearance is mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential duties of the position include the following, and other duties may be assigned:

Research & Development:

  • Develop and optimize novel hybrid plasma confinement systems for advanced fusion reactors.
  • Explore alternative ignition mechanisms to achieve sustainable, scalable fusion reactions.
  • Implement ultra-high-density plasma sustainment techniques to extend fusion stability and performance.
  • Design and deploy intelligent plasma control systems leveraging AI/ML for real-time optimization.
  • Innovate plasma heating methodologies, including advanced RF and laser-driven approaches.
  • Conduct theoretical modeling, numerical simulations, and experimental validation of plasma systems.
  • Lead R&D on magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) propulsion technologies for aerospace applications.

Collaboration & Leadership:

  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams including nuclear engineers, materials scientists, and aerospace engineers to ensure cohesive project development.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international scientific forums.
  • Apply for and manage U.S. government grants related to nuclear and plasma physics research.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior scientists and engineers.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Plasma Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in high-energy plasma physics and nuclear fusion research.
  • Proven hands-on experience with experimental fusion confinement systems.
  • Strong expertise in computational modeling and simulation of high-energy plasmas using tools such as COMSOL, MHD codes, and particle-in-cell simulations.
  • Demonstrated innovation in fusion ignition, plasma heating, and confinement system development.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to plasma or nuclear systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of magnetoplasmadynamic propulsion concepts.
  • Active TS/SCI CI U.S. government-issued security clearance required prior to start.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
  • Experience with U.S. grant application processes for nuclear research funding.

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics as applied to nuclear fusion processes.
  • Proficiency in theoretical and computational plasma physics modeling and experimental validation methods.

Language Ability:

  • Excellent technical writing skills for documentation, research papers, and grant proposals.

Math Ability:

  • Advanced numerical aptitude for plasma modeling, simulation, and data analysis.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Analytical problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex plasma physics challenges and optimize fusion system performance.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency with plasma simulation tools, AI/ML frameworks, and standard scientific computing software.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Only candidates with Active TS/SCI CI security clearance required and will be considered.
  • Relevant certifications in nuclear or plasma physics research and safety preferred.

Travel:

This position may require minimal travel (up to 10%) for conferences, government meetings, or collaborative site visits.
