Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe to join our dynamic ophthalmology practice. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in patient care, medical documentation, and ophthalmic procedures, with a passion for providing exceptional service in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop specialized skills in eye care while supporting physicians in delivering comprehensive ophthalmologic services. The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with patient intake, recording clinical notes, and ensuring the smooth operation of daily clinic activities.
Responsibilities
- Perform patient intake procedures, including collecting medical histories and updating electronic health records (EHR) systems such as Epic and other EMR platforms.
- Measure vital signs accurately and document findings to assist physicians in diagnosing ocular conditions.
- Assist with ophthalmic examinations by preparing patients and handling specialized equipment, ensuring proper aseptic technique is maintained at all times.
- Support physicians during procedures by documenting clinical notes precisely and efficiently as a scribe.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and ensure secure handling of medical records.
- Conduct basic optical assessments and assist with vision testing, including refraction and visual acuity measurements.
- Manage front desk responsibilities such as scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information, and performing retail sales of optical products when necessary.
- Support clinic operations by maintaining organized medical records, managing inventory of ophthalmic supplies, and assisting with billing or coding tasks related to ophthalmology services.
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and ophthalmic procedures to effectively communicate with patients and team members.
Requirements
- Prior experience in medical office settings, particularly within ophthalmology or optometry clinics, is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Proficiency in taking vital signs, conducting intake assessments, and documenting clinical encounters accurately.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control protocols essential for maintaining a sterile environment during procedures.
- Familiarity with optical equipment, vision testing methods, and ophthalmic terminology is preferred.
- Experience working with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms; familiarity with medical coding and billing processes is a plus.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask efficiently in a busy clinic setting.
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients, physicians, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Basic retail math skills for optical sales transactions; previous retail sales experience can be advantageous but is not mandatory.
