Position Title: Opioid Arts SME

The Opioid–Arts SME will support a federally funded project updating the evidence base on the role of the arts in pain management and in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder. The SME will contribute expertise to the project’s literature review and program scan, ensuring methodological rigor, scientific accuracy, and alignment with current evidence-based practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Depending on qualifications and availability, the SME may:
- Serve as Principal Investigator (PI): Provide scientific leadership, oversight of project design, analysis, and final deliverables.
- Serve as a Research Analyst/Consultant: Support literature review, coding, program scan interviews, synthesis, and technical writing.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Provide subject matter expertise in at least one of the following areas: creative arts therapies research, pain management research, and/or substance use/addiction research.
- Support or lead the integrative literature review and evidence synthesis.
- Contribute to the program scan, including identifying candidate programs, conducting SME interviews, and synthesizing findings.
- Draft or co-author sections of interim and final reports, tables, and appendices.
- Participate in technical working group discussions and provide expert feedback on deliverables.
- Ensure deliverables comply with federal requirements (Chicago Manual of Style, NEA style guide, Section 508).
- Represent the project team in communications with the federal sponsor if designated as PI.
Education and/or Experience
Required:
- Graduate degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in public health, psychology, creative arts therapies, medicine, social sciences, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of research or evaluation experience (graduate-level research counts).
- Documented expertise in at least one of the following areas: creative arts therapies, pain management, or substance use disorder/addiction research.
- Experience with literature reviews, program evaluations, or peer-reviewed research.
- Demonstrated academic or professional writing (e.g., reports, publications, thesis).
Preferred:
- Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DrPH, PsyD, or equivalent).
- Record of peer-reviewed publications or leadership on federally funded research projects.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary research teams or federal deliverables.
- Documented expertise in more than one of the focus areas listed above.
- Familiarity with systematic/integrative review methods, coding frameworks, or mixed-methods appraisal tools.
- Proficiency with citation management software (e.g., EndNote, Zotero).
- Demonstrated experience with technical writing for federal reports (tables, charts, appendices).
