Job Description – Optometrist

Dr. M. L. Dhawale Memorial Trust Hospital, (Charitable), Palghar

Position Title: Optometrist

Department: Ophthalmology / Vision Care
Reports To: Ophthalmologist / Medical Superintendent
Location: Palghar

1. Role Summary

The Optometrist will provide accurate, compassionate, and community-oriented vision care as part of the hospital’s mission to deliver accessible and quality eye services. The role includes OPD work, pre- and post-operative evaluation, refraction, community screening, and patient education.

2. Key Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Perform detailed vision assessment, refraction, and prescribe spectacles.
  • Conduct slit-lamp exam, tonometry, and basic diagnostic tests.
  • Identify common eye conditions and refer appropriately to the ophthalmologist.
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care for cataract and other surgeries.
  • Maintain patient records, OPD documentation, and equipment hygiene.

Community Outreach

  • Participate in eye screening camps in villages, schools, and workplaces.
  • Support identification and referral of cataract and other cases.
  • Educate communities on preventive eye health, spectacle use, and diabetes-related eye risks.

Patient Counselling

  • Guide spectacle usage, lens hygiene, lifestyle care, and postoperative instructions.
  • Ensure respectful, empathetic interaction with all patients, especially elderly and underserved populations.

Operational

  • Support optical dispensing and adjust spectacles for proper fit.
  • Help maintain data for hospital reporting and quality audits.

3. Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • B.Optom or Diploma in Optometry from a recognised institute.

Experience

  • 0–1 year in a hospital or community eye-care setting (NGO experience preferred).

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge in refraction testing, slit-lamp examination, and basic diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of common ocular conditions and referral protocols.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and patient-counselling abilities.
  • Empathy, patience, and a service-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, and community health workers.

4. Work Environment

  • Hospital OPD setting with regular participation in rural outreach camps.
  • Requires field visits in surrounding villages as part of preventive eye-care initiatives.

5. Salary

Rs. 15,000 – 20,000/-

Job Types: Full-time, Fresher

Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
