The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Office of the Commissioner, Bureau of Hearings has a full-time vacancy for Hearings Bureau Paralegal (Paralegal I), SOC Title 23-2010 PARALGLS-LGL ASSTS-3. This position has a 37.5 hour work week and is considered non-exempt. This is a grant funded position and subject to renewal every two years.
SUMMARY: Assists with and coordinates prosecution of DWI/OUI alcohol and drug related cases to the N.H. Circuit Courts statewide; assists the prosecuting attorneys by answering motions, attending select court hearings, preparing various exhibits, subpoenas and documents, doing case searches and reviewing legal terminology.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Associate's degree and 1 year of experience OR equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in law, paralegal, legal research, legal investigative work, criminal justice, or an area that provides experience with legal terminology and procedures.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license
Other Requirements:
1. Selected candidate will undergo a fingerprint-based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check in order to ensure suitability for exposure to confidential information.
2. Must be able to travel to DOS prosecution offices statewide as needed to assist paralegal/prosecutor on DWI alcohol/drug cases.
Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 2+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares responses to defense motions and prepares motions to continue and other motions on behalf of the State for filing by a prosecuting attorney.
Sets up files and gives to Prosecutor for review. Follows -up with investigating Trooper for any missing documents or witness statements.
Maintains calendar for attorney. Updates databases/defendant lists accordingly.
Enters and maintains DWI case data into an electronic database/case management system for statistical documentation of prosecution DWI caseload; including motions, pleadings, briefs, correspondence, and investigation data.
Researches DWI specific case and statutory law and provides documentation to allow the prosecuting attorney to issue advice to superiors and to officers regarding other cases in which the officers themselves may be functioning as prosecutors.
Prepares and issues subpoenas to witnesses and calendars cases to the Circuit Courts in various areas of the state for the staff attorneys.
Evaluates court DWI/alcohol drug related decisions to determine impact on the Department’s law enforcement efforts related to DWI and prepares educational materials regarding such decisions under the direction of a supervisor.
Maintains office supplies and equipment. Submits work, repair and supply orders as needed.
Drafts correspondence and basic legal documents under the direction of the prosecuting attorney to include preparation of written draft and final versions of letters, legal documents, interview transcripts, statements, lists, and memoranda Maintains filing system for all files, hard copy or electronic for all cases, legal documents, correspondence and reference materials.
Responds to daily court calendared submission of documents under the direction of a staff attorney, and prepares written or telephonic inquiries as to pertinent laws and rules. Answers and responds to telephone calls in a courteous and professional manner.
