Position Summary:
Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) provides outreach and case management services to Veterans and Veteran families who are literally homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The provision of legal services is critical to addressing the various issues that interfere with a Veteran’s ability to obtain or retain permanent housing and supportive services. The SSVF Paralegal/Legal Assistant would work in collaboration with SSVF staff and its contract legal service provider to address the common issues faced by Veterans, including but not limited to eviction, landlord/tenant issues, child support, military discharge upgrade, and debt collection. The SSVF Paralegal/Legal Assistant will complete legal intake, complete data entry in HMIS, and maintain confidential records.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct in-person, telephone, or virtual intake to assess legal requests, including obtaining documentation.
  • Provide advice and brief services to clients seeking assistance with housing, tenant rights, benefits, etc
  • Input data in HMIS and case file maintenance.
  • Conduct field visits as needed to conduct assessment or case follow-up.
  • Coordinate client service and advocacy with the legal services subcontractor.
  • Track external referrals and client outcomes.
  • Engage and build networks with legal stakeholders and community partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledgeable of team concepts.
  • Ability to coordinate and work well with community partners and organizations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with low-income, homeless, and Veteran populations.
  • Knowledge of community resources includes, but not limited to, social services, housing, and financial assistance.
  • Spanish proficiency is desirable but not required.
Compensation
Actual compensation will not be less than the applicable minimum wage, prevailing wage, or exempt salary requirements under federal, state and local laws.
