About the Role:

We are seeking a professional and detail-oriented Paralegal for a full-time, onsite contract position with a state government agency's Legal Office in Indianapolis, IN. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist the Department's Legal Counsel by managing and processing public records requests.

This is a critical staff position that involves learning and applying the Indiana Code to Access to Public Records requests, researching legal sources, and ensuring the timely processing of incoming requests.

Please note: This is a fully onsite position in Indianapolis, IN. An in-person interview is required.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Learn and apply the Indiana Code to Access to Public Records to determine the release or denial of records.
  • Research and analyze legal sources, including statutes and judicial decisions, related to public records.
  • Process incoming Public Records Requests within the allotted timeframe.
  • Review and process law enforcement recordings with appropriate redactions per Indiana Code.
  • Prepare legal documents for review and approval by Legal Counsel.
  • Coordinate the assembly of documentation required for subpoenas and discovery requests.
  • Maintain organized files and responsive records.
  • Answer phone inquiries and communicate clearly with both the public and internal staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must meet ONE of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 12 hours in law or paralegal studies.
  • Bachelor's degree AND a Paralegal certificate.
  • Bachelor's degree PLUS two (2) years of full-time Paralegal experience.
  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies (with certification) AND two (2) years of full-time legal experience.
  • Certification in paralegal studies PLUS two (2) years of full-time paralegal experience.
  • PACE or CORE Competency Exam from the National Federation of Paralegal Associations.
  • CLA/CP certification from the National Association of Legal Assistants.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Strong problem-solving, proofreading, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
