GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Airport Manager, the Airport Safety Manager is responsible for coordinating and enhancing safety practices among airport users, with a primary focus on flight school operations and pilot education. This position supports a proactive safety culture by tracking, reviewing, and following up on safety reports, conducting outreach with airport stakeholders, and promoting standardized operating procedures at Spanish Fork Airport (KSPK).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for airport safety coordination with flight schools, instructors, and airport users.
  • Reviews, tracks, and follows up on safety reports, incidents, and operational concerns; coordinates with airport users to identify root causes and promote corrective actions.
  • Conducts regular check-ins with all flight schools and commercial operators to ensure awareness and adherence to airport procedures, safety campaigns, and operational expectations.
  • Promotes and educates airport users on KSPK VFR procedures, safety initiatives, and standard operating practices.
  • Assists in developing and implementing airport safety campaigns, training materials, and outreach efforts.
  • Coordinates with Airport Manager, Airport Board, and City staff regarding safety trends, concerns, and recommended improvements.
  • Maintains documentation of safety communications, follow-ups, and outreach activities.
  • Supports emergency preparedness efforts by assisting in coordination with local fire, EMS, and police departments for training and response planning.
  • Attends Airport Board meetings as needed and provides updates on safety initiatives, trends, and user coordination efforts.
  • Maintains positive and professional relationships with airport tenants, flight schools, instructors, and the public.
  • Positively supports the mission of the airport and promotes safe and efficient operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Airport Manager.
  • Budget Authority:
    • None. All expenditures must be approved by the Airport Manager.

  • ToolsEquipment Used:

    • Personal computer, including email, word processing and spreadsheet software; motor vehicle; calculator; phone; copy and fax machine.
    • Must be capable of operating airport equipment including tractor and snow plow.

  • Working HoursConditions:

    • Approximately 5-10 hours per week with flexible scheduling.
    • Some evening or weekend coordination with flight schools or airport users may be required.
    • Work is primarily administrative and coordination-based, with regular on-site presence at the airport for meetings, outreach, and observations.
    • On-call duties may be assigned.

Must comply with all applicable City policies and procedures..

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Training or experience in aviation, airport management, safety management systems (SMS), or a related field preferred. FAA Pilot Certificates and familiarity with KSPK preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively with pilots, instructors, and aviation businesses. The position also requires the ability to analyze safety trends and effectively communicate findings, as well as the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.

Special Qualifications: Special qualifications include a working knowledge of general aviation operations and airport procedures, familiarity with FAA safety practices and communication protocols, and possession of a valid Utah driver's license.
