Part-time Delivery Driver - Public Libraries

JOB INFORMATION

Non-exempt; part-time; 18 hours per week; varied schedule during FCPL hours*; no-benefits

This position is responsible for driving library delivery vehicle, loading, unloading and transporting library materials, supplies, equipment, communications and other items to and from designated FCPL locations. This work requires a significant amount of repetitive lifting in order to move materials into and out of the assigned County vehicle. Supervision is received from the Facilities Coordinator. Work direction may be received from the Facilities Coordinator, Senior Processing Technician, and/or Library Collections Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support primary drivers of FCPL vehicles by acting as backup driver, including Early Start Bookmobile, Community Bookmobile, and delivery box truck
  • Operate vehicle and assist customers with general information questions and material selection while on the Early Start and Community Bookmobiles
  • Operate library delivery vehicle transporting materials to and from appropriate destinations; operate the vehicle on-time along an assigned and scheduled route; pick up and deliver pouches, boxes, bags, equipment, etc. from branch locations and deliver items to appropriate destinations
  • Act as primary driver for additional deliveries and pick-ups between library locations as required, including large items such as furniture and the library’s book bike
  • Assist Facilities Coordinator and primary Driver Clerk with ongoing fleet vehicle maintenance, including cleaning, refueling, and taking to FCG Fleet or maintenance
  • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Knowledge of Maryland state and local traffic laws and regulations
  • Ability and willingness to learn to operate all fleet vehicles
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills including the ability to complete required record-keeping, to effectively utilize a cellular telephone, and to understand and follow spoken and written instructions
  • Ability to accurately complete required forms and documentation
  • Ability to effectively read maps and follow travel directions
  • Ability to effectively organize work, problem solve, determine priorities, make decisions and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision and within established time frames
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and effectively manage time in a busy environment
  • Ability and willingness to drive in varied weather conditions, if conditions have not caused service to be suspended
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and follow proper procedures
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, FCPL patrons and the general public
  • Strong internal and external customer service ability including ability to exhibit patience, tact, and courtesy working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize Microsoft 365 , e-mail, spreadsheet and other systems and equipment, and to learn new software as it is required
  • Ability and willingness to learn to operate all fleet vehicles

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Work experience driving a van, box truck, bus or similar large vehicle
  • Customer service work experience

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
  • While in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk, climb, stoop, lift between 20 - 50 pounds, push and pull over 40 pounds, reach and drive; and frequently sit and perform repetitive motions
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors and outdoors and walk on uneven ground; and frequently work in hot temperatures above 100 degrees and cold temperatures below 32 degrees
  • Physical requirements include the ability to maintain strenuous physical activity throughout the majority of the workday (6-7 hours), including bending and stooping while entering and exiting the transport vehicle and lifting/carrying bags, boxes and other FCPL materials weighing up to approximately 60 pounds, and also to perform basic maintenance on assigned vehicles

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

  • Ability to provide own transportation to meetings, workshops and branch libraries as needed
  • Available for varied workdays and hours within the FCPL operating schedule
  • This position is subject to post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and random drug and alcohol testing

The County offers a Section 457 Plan. Deferred compensation plans allow participants to save for retirement now and pay taxes later by contributing a portion of their salaries pre-tax to the plan.
