POSITION SUMMARY:
The Groundlings Theatre is seeking a Part-Time Light Board Operator (Sub) to support live performances and rehearsals. This role is responsible for operating and programming the lighting board for improv and sketch comedy productions in a fast-paced, collaborative theatre environment.
This is an ongoing substitute position with variable scheduling based on production needs. Availability for evening call times is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
■ Operate the ETC Express 48/96 lighting board for live performances and rehearsals.
■ Program lighting cues as needed, including occasional on-the-fly adjustments during shows.
■ Troubleshoot LED fixtures and address DMX-related issues.
■ Perform routine lighting maintenance, including checking fixtures and replacing lamps and gels.
■ Collaborate professionally with directors, performers, stage management, and production staff.
■ Adapt quickly to script changes, improvisational elements, and evolving productions needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
■ Demonstrated proficiency operating an ETC Express 48/96 lighting console, or similar.
■ Experience with live event or theatrical lighting operation.
■ Working knowledge of DMX systems and LED fixture troubleshooting.
■ Ability to program efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
■ Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with creative teams.
■ Familiarity with improvisation and sketch comedy formats strongly preferred.
■ Reliable, professional, and adaptable.
SCHEDULE AND TRAINING
Evening availability is required, as typical call times are between 5:00—6:00pm and are occasionally earlier. Shifts range from 5—8 hours, depending on rehearsal and performance schedules. Monthly shift volume varies.
Paid, hands-on training will be provided prior to scheduled shows, based on mutual availability.

■ Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a theatre environment.
■ Ability to occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
■ Ability to access lighting positions, control booths, and backstage areas, which may include stairs.
