The Opportunity

A well-regarded law firm in upstate New York is seeking a Patent Attorney or Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team in either Rochester or Buffalo, NY. This is a full-time role offering the opportunity to work on cutting-edge patent prosecution matters for a diverse range of clients in the fields of optics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or aerospace engineering. The position comes with relocation assistance if required*.

Primary Duties

• Manage patent prosecution for a wide variety of clients in the fields of optics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and aerospace engineering.
• Prepare and file patent applications and respond to office actions from the USPTO.
• Work closely with clients to understand their innovations and provide strategic patent advice.
• Collaborate with colleagues within the firm to ensure high-quality service for clients.
• Contribute to meeting the annual billable hour target of 1,800 hours.
• Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to clients and colleagues.
• Stay updated on current patent laws and regulations to ensure compliance.

Requirements

• 2-6 years of experience in patent prosecution, with a technical background in optics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or aerospace engineering.
• Admission to the New York State Bar (or willingness to gain admission).
• Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
• A portable book of business is not required.
• Candidates relocating from out of state may be temporarily hired as a Law Clerk while awaiting bar admission.
• Writing samples are preferred but not mandatory for this non-litigation role.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $125,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
