Patient Care Technician, Labor & Delivery (Behrend Students)

UPMC Hamot is looking to hire a Penn State Behrend student from the Art of Labor program.

This position is casual and reserved for Behrend Students.

Schedule will follow designated preceptor, will include days and nights. Full time commitment (36 hours) in the summer, minimum of 8hrs/week during the school year except for finals week

Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides routine patient care and supports departmental operations in accordance with established policies and procedures. Under the direction of a nurse or physician, the PCT ensures high‑quality patient care at all times. Responsibilities include core UPMC nursing assistant duties such as activities of daily living (ADLs), point‑of‑care testing, vital signs, mobility support, and prevention of hospital-acquired conditions. The PCT must successfully complete all required competencies.

Based on operational need, the PCT will also achieve and maintain competency in one or more advanced skills, including:

  • Phlebotomy/venipuncture
  • Peripheral IV removal
  • Indwelling Foley catheter removal
  • Basic arrhythmia recognition
  • 12‑lead EKG
  • NG tube clamping and removal

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform routine nursing assistant duties, including bathing, feeding, toileting, transporting, ambulating, and turning/repositioning patients.
  • Complete point‑of‑care testing (e.g., blood glucose), weights, vital signs, intake and output, and telemetry monitor application/reapplication.
  • Support HAC and PSI prevention using equipment such as TED hose and SCDs.
  • Perform simple dressings, bladder scans, specimen collection, “ticket to ride” preparation, and application/removal of restraints per protocol.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
  • Provide patient and family instruction under RN direction.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Demonstrate clear, professional communication with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Establish and maintain respectful and productive interpersonal relationships.
  • Participate in unit activities such as responding to call lights and phones, passing meal trays, and assisting with patient transport.
  • Show awareness of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment issues in healthcare.
  • Support a safe and positive work environment through accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to teamwork.

Professional Development

  • Constructively receive feedback and take action to improve knowledge and performance.
  • Communicate learning needs to the unit director and participate in self-review when requested.
  • Request assistance with planning and prioritizing tasks as needed.
  • Suggest and support departmental changes, initiatives, and quality improvement projects.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including standard precautions and safety standards.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly to the appropriate department.
  • Document in the medical record accurately and according to established procedures.

Operational Support

  • Complete clerical tasks as needed.
  • Perform assigned work in a timely, productive manner.
  • Meet all system‑wide competencies and behavioral expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Enrollment in a Nursing Program and one of the following:
    a) At least 1 year of general healthcare experience, OR
    b) 6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR
    c) Completion of at least one clinical rotation in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse only.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – must meet AHA standards, including didactic and hands‑on skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 31 Mandated Reporter Training – completion within 90 days of hire or transfer, with renewal as required.

Preferred Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
